A collection of thirty-eight issues from this weekly illustrated magazine for children bound in one. Containing a series of short stories, poetry and music by a variety of authors such as H. and C. Guy, Gonzague Privat, and Eugene Le Mouel among others. Each issue presents a full page colour title page and other illustrations in text both in colour and in black and white. Comprising all consecutive issues from 5 Octobre 1895 No. 1 to 20 June 1896 No. 38. Pagination is continuous. Bound in a lovely half morocco binding. Title page for the 1894-5 volume, with half title included. In a half morocco binding over marbled boards and edges, gilt tooling to the spine. Externally very smart with only minor shelf wear, minor rubbing to the spine and boards. The front hinge is only lightly strained, holding firm. The volume firmly bound. Some spotting scattered to the leaves, which are also lightly age toned, as usual due to the type of paper used. Dublin, James Moore, 1793. Leather. A collection of popular eighteenth century periodicals, including the entire run of Steele's The Guardian John Hawkesworth (c. 1715 – November 16, 1773), English writer, was born in London. In company with Samuel Johnson and others he started a periodical called The Adventurer, which ran to 140 numbers, of which 70 were from the pen of Hawkesworth himself. The Guardian was a short-lived newspaper published in London from 12 March to 1 October 1713. It was founded by Sir Richard Steele (bap. 1672 – 1729) who was an Irish writer and politician. It featured contributions from Joseph Addison, Thomas Tickell and Ambrose Philips. Steele and Addison had previously collaborated on the Tatler and The Spectator (not related to the present-day Spectator). This volume contains Numbers I-CXI (Tuesday 7th November 1752 - Saturday 9th March 1754) of The Adventurer and Numbers I-CLXXVI (Thursday 12th March - Tuesday 1st October 1713) of The Guardian. This is therefore the entire run of all issues ever published Bound in calf with gilt detail to the spine. The binding is generally firm but the text block has split in one place exposing the chords. There is some significant wear to the extremities including a significant areas of loss, a split to the spine and absence of the spine label. The inner hinges are strained. Internally the pages are generally bright and clean with the odd spot and some staining. There are ink inscriptions to the front free end paper and the title page. The magazine was subtitled Lectures du soir , or Readings in the Evening. In quarter calf bindings with marbled paper covered boards. Comprising: Volumes 26 (October and January 1821-22) to 47 (March and July 1832), lacking only Volume 40 (May-June 1829). With political, literary, historical and topical articles, concerning, for instance, the slave trade, Australia, discoveries in Africa, cholera, the poor laws, universities, and canals, railways and locomotive steam engines. There is a fold-out 'Scale Shewing the Linear Proportion of the Different Branches of Public Expenditure for the Year 1825' to Volume 35. In decorative half calf bindings with marbled boards. Externally, slightly rubbed to extremities, with occasional wear to spines. Small label to rear board of Volume 28. Fifteen joints starting, but firm with two joints cracked. Internally, firmly bound. The front free-endpaper of Volume 28 is coming away. Remarkably bright, with intermittent light foxing, and the odd mark.
