Audrey was the youngest daughter of an Anglo-American lumber and steel millionaire, sister to Edward James, a key figure in the Surrealist movement, and the illegitimate granddaughter of King Edward VII. She was an English socialite known for her beauty and for charming various wealthy men, she was included in The Book of Beauty by Cecil Beaton. A patron of the arts, she assisted Viscount Carlow financially in the publication of limited editions of numerous works by leading literary figures such as T E Lawrence, James Joyce, Wyndham Lewis, and others. A hedonistic pursuer, she was recognised as one of the 'Bright Young Things&apos.  In a quarter morocco binding signed Sangorski and Sutcliffe, with five raised bands, marbled endpapers, and gilt to the top edge. Externally very smart with minor shelf wear only and minor rubbing to the spine and boards, only some sunning to the spine and minor general marking. Internally, firmly bound. With a faint minor spotting to the fore edge, affecting only the endpapers. Otherwise, the pages are bright and clean. With a significant cracking to the joints, particularly the lower joint, and a minor loss to the tail of the spine of vol. XI, holding firm. Lacking pp. 839-876 of vol. XIV. Ownership inscription to the title page, with minor inscriptions to the odd leaf, some dated 1910. Minor closed tear to p.12 vol. IX. Minor damp staining to the upper right corner of the rear leaves of vol. XIV. Internally, the binding is generally firm, with slightly strained hinges which are holding firm. With a minor faint spotting to the fore edge, affecting particularly the first and last few leaves. Otherwise, the pages are generally bright and clean throughout. A minor closed tear to p.295 of vol. I, tape repaired by a previous owner. Illustrated with numerous decorations in text throughout. With advertisements and photographs.  Very Good . This interesting and very scarce book contains a collection of the monthly issues of The Home Tidings, a monthly publication from the Polytechnic Young Men's Christian Institute. The publications include short stories, letters to the editor, sports fixtur The Polytechnic in Regent Street was established by a missionary worker, Quintin Hogg, who had previously run a Young Men's Christian Institute in the Covent Garden. Hogg envisaged the Polytechnic as a "spiritual, social, educational and athletic" environment for young men otherwise without homes or support in the city. They could room there while attending classes and activities. A day school was opened on the premises in 1886, and this continues today as the Quintin Kynaston Secondary School in St John's Wood, London. (British Library) In a half-Morocco binding.
