First performed at Glyndebourne in 1946, this is an opera in two acts by Benjamin Britten, originally performed by Kathleen Ferrier, for whom the work was written.Benjamin Britten (1913-1976) was an English composer, one of the most prolific and acclaimed of the twentieth century.Brightly illustrated from original designs for scenery and costumes by John Piper, including three folding plates in colour, and five colour plates besides. The first and limited editions of Landscape (978 of 1000) and Mac (885 of 1000), in their original cloth bindings. Mac is inscribed to the front free end paper by Emanuel (Jimmy) Wax, dated 1982. Facsimile of author's signature to the rear of both volumes. Harold Pinter (1930-2008) was a British playwright, screenwriter, director and actor. Pinter was one of the most influential modern British dramatists and won the Nobel Prize in 2005. Landscape is a one-act play, first broadcast on radio in 1968 and first performed on stage in 1969. The play shows the difficulties of communication between two people in a marriage. The dialogue resembles two independent monologues. Landscape was first presented on radio by the BBC on 25th April 1968, directed by Guy Vaesen with Peggy Ashcroft as Beth and Eric Porter as Duff. Mac is Pinter's non-fiction memoir about his brief touring as an actor in Anew McMaster's Irish theatre repertory company, and has a biographical note to the rear of the volume. Rutling was an important figure in the arts, specifically due to his representation as a Black man. He was a pioneer campaigner against racism and has inspired generations of people in Britain. A scarce first UK edition of this dramatic novel, which was based upon Sardou's successful French play, with a sensational illustration on the front board. First UK Edition, very scarce. This is the wonderful novel form of Victorien Sardou's successful French play, which opened at the Theatre du Vaudeville in Paris in 1882, and ran for 135 performances. The first production starred Sarah Bernhart, who wore a soft felt hat which soon became a popular fashion for women. This play is directly responsible for the hat being referred to as the 'fedora' today.  This play follows Princess Fedora Romazoff, who is secretly engaged to marry Count Vladimir Yariskin, the son of the St Petersburg police chief. When Vladimir is found mortally wounded, Fedora decides to take vengeance on the perpetrator, Count Loris Ipanoff. Victorien Sardou (1831-1908) was a French dramatist, who is best remembered for his development of the 'well-made play&apos. He wrote several plays that were made into popular nineteenth-century operas, like 'La Tosca' and 'Madame Sans-Gene&apos. This work was adapted by Henry Llewellyn Williams (1842-), a prolific American author and translator. Undated, so dated off of Jisc from an identical copy held at the University of Oxford Libraries.Collated, complete. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, sound. Boards are soiled and discoloured, as is spine. Wear to the spine has resulted in weak joints, with the fraying and loss to the boards. Including Le Cid (1636), Horace (1640), Cinna (1643), and more. Pierre Corneille (1606-1684) is considered to be one of the best tragedians in French history, along with Moliere and Racine. This work also contains a brief introduction of the history of French theatre, as well as a biography of Corneille, by M.D. Saucie. It is in the original French. It contains a engraved frontispiece, a vignette title page, along with two additional engraved plates. Collated and complete. Also containing a tipped-in prize bookplate from the Institution des Dames L'Hermite Soeurs Rouen, dated 1894. This is an interesting associated, as Corneille was born in Rouen. Handsomely bound in quarter calf binding with decorative cloth boards. Externally, very smart, with just some light shelf wear and very light rubbing to the joints and extremities. Internally, hinges slightly tender. The rest of the binding is firm.
