A very scarce object. Presenting this very rare and unique bound book of hymns sung at a 'kneipe', or party, held in honour of C.F. Chandler at Columbia University on May 13, 1910. Charles Frederick Chandler (December 6, 1836 – August 25, 1925) was an American chemist, best known for his regulatory work in public health, sanitation, and consumer safety in New York City, as well as his work in chemical education—first at Union College and then, for the majority of his career, at Columbia University, where he taught in the Chemical Department, the College of Physicians and Surgeons, and served as the first Dean of Columbia University's School of Mines.Including hymns such as 'Amici', 'Famous Yankee Chemist', 'Glory, Glory for Columbia', and more. The nineteenth-century handwritten diary detailing the amateur career of an unnamed musician and composer, bound in full calf and including the original functioning lock and key. A fascinating and unique diary manuscript titled 'Musical Memories' by the unnamed author. Narrating his first musical memories during his childhood in 1866, through the next twenty years of this life, the unnamed author chronicles his amateur career as a musician and composer. From the manuscript, it is clear that the author grew up in Weymouth, served in the 29th Regiment at Jersey in 1876, and composed several operettas from the mid 1870s to the late 1880s. He also performed and conducted performances for the Castle Cary Choral Society in Cadbury.  The author also details noted nineteenth-century musicians he has been acquainted with, including Alfred Caldicott and Thomas German Reed. A fascinating picture of the nineteenth-century music scene in the South of England. This copy was bound and produced by A. Webster and Larkin Stationers in Piccadilly, and it still retains its original functioning clasp, lock, and key.One hundred and eighty-six pages have been used in this diary, leaving approximately fifty pages blank. In full leather binding, with the original functioning clasp, lock, and key. Including the binder's sticker to the front pastedown. Externally, generally sound, with some shelf wear to the boards and rubbing to the spine, joints, and extremities. Joints are slightly tender. Internally, hinges have been reinforced. The Vaughan Williams Memorial Library is the library and archive of the English Folk Dance and Song Society, located in Cecil Sharp House. It is a multi-media library comprising books, periodicals, audio-visual materials, photographs, sound recordings, manuscripts, field notes, etc. of a number of collectors of folk music and dance traditions in the British Isles. It is named after Ralph Vaughan Williams, the composer, collector and past president of the EFDSS. This catalogue holds a record of all the acquisitions to this library since its inception until 1971. Over the years, the library has added collections of folklorists such as Lucy Broadwood, Janet Blunt, Anne Gilchrist, George Butterworth and George Gardiner. It also contains copies of the papers and notebooks of Sabine Baring-Gould, Ralph Vaughan Williams and James Madison Carpenter; and the field recordings of Percy Grainger and the BBC Folk Music Archive. Reprinted collection of French songs and rounds with colourful nineteenth century line prints by Imagerie d'Epinal. This Blue Series contains 40 popular songs. The illustrations are based from imaging artists of the nineteenth century, who at the time would transfer and print their drawings on lithographic stones. When this copy was printed, modern techniques would have been used, but the colour application still uses traditional methods. Joseph Addison was an English essayist, poet, playwright and politician. He was the eldest son of The Reverend Lancelot Addison. His name is usually remembered alongside that of his long-standing friend Richard Steele, with whom he founded The Spectator magazine. Volume I contains many essays and poems by Addison such as 'A Song for St Cecilia's Day', 'The Campaign' and 'An Essay of Virgil's Georgics&apos. Volume II is Addison's opera Rosamund and his incredibly famous tragedy Cato along with his comedy The Drummer, The Whig Examiner and The Lover. To the third volume are a collection of longer essays both religious, political and literary. Volume III also contains seven plates, collated and complete. Volume IV contains his Remarks on Several Parts of Italy. Volume IV also contains two plates, collated and complete Handsomely bound in half calf with marble covered boards and gilt stamping to the spine. Externally, in lovely condition.
