Alexander Gray, Sir Halewyn: Examples in Europe Balladry and Folk Song
Alexander Gray
Sir Halewyn: Examples in Europe Balladry and Folk Song
Edinburgh; London, Oliver and Boyd, 1949. First edition. Cloth. An interesting first edition copy on the history of European balladry, focusing upon the Dutch folk tale of Heer Halewijn, signed by the author with a letter from the author laid in to the front of text. First Edition. In the original unclipped dust wrapper. With a signature from the author to the front endpaper, which says 'For S. F. McCleary', the author-academic, as well as a type-written letter from Gray to McCleary adhered to front paste down. The letter makes it clear that this book was a gift to Gray's friend, and he also acknowledges that this work is 'the kind of book which- quite properly- no one buys&apos. This work is an interesting academic study into the various examples of european balladry and folk song, but focuses particularly upon Sir Halewyn. Also titled 'Heer Halewijn', this folktale originates from Denmark and dates back to pre-Christian times. It tells the story of Lord Halewijn, who is either an evil man, a magician, a demon, or a fairy lord who sings a magical song that makes women drawn to him. He meets them in the forest, where he then kills them, until a princess falls under his spell. Alexander Gray (1882-1968) was a Scottish civil servant, academic, and writer, who featured some of his work within Northern Numbers, the periodical which was edited by Hugh MacDiarmid. His best known poem is 'Scotland', which is on the Canongate Wall of the Scottish Parliament building. Collated, complete. In the publisher's original cloth binding, in the original unclipped dust wrapper. Externally, excellent, with minimal edge wear and very light bumping to the head and tail of spine. Graham Greene, The Third Man
Graham Greene
The Third Man
London, National Book League, 1950. Paperback. A vanishingly scarce original advertising poster for The Third Man, written by noted British author Graham Greene. A lovely and possibly unique collector's piece. It is probable the poster was hung in the foyer of The National Book League's office in Mayfair in order to promote the film The Third Man. The original artwork in gauache heightened with white. Mounted on letterpress poster base. The National Book League was created to promote the habit of reading and a wider appreciation in books. The league was established following a meeting at the home of noted writer Hugh Walpole. The league focuses on a number of opportunities to increase reading, including the promotion of Book Tokens as well as the Sunday Times Book Fairs, which began in 1933. Their offices were at 7 Albermarle Street in Mayfair, London, the address of which is stated at the bottom of the poster alongside an invitation to obtain posters from them. This charming proof poster advertises the 1949 film The Third Man, written by noted author Graham Greene. The film noir, which was directed by Carol Reed, stared Joseph Cotton, Orson Welles and Trevor Howard. Set in postwar Vienna, the atmospheric black and white expressionist cinematography captures the feeling of post-war Vienna at the start of the Cold War. A fascinating piece of film history, and an excellent example for any collector. Original artwork mounted on letterpress poster base. Externally in excellent condition, with the occasional light spot. Small scuff to upper left of poster. Light adhesive stains visible where poster mount is lifting slightly. Framed and glazed with seller's label of Lovelys Gallery in Kent to the reverse. Near Fine . Ill.: Not Stated. Near Fine .
