Tenby: a Sea-Side Holiday. APPARENTLY UNRECORDED VARIANT OF THE UNILLUSTRATED ISSUE IN PUBLISHER'S BINDING
Van Voorst,, 1856. 8vo., First Edition, Unillustrated Issue, neat contemporary signature (dated 1856) on front paste-down; original green herringbone cloth, sides with multiple frame border in blind, second compartment lettered in gilt, uncut, primrose endpapers, expertly rebacked, old backstrip laid down, a remarkably well-preserved, bright, clean, crisp copy. With 8pp publisher's catalogue (dated March 1856) bound in at end. This work is based on on a family holday on the Welsh side of the Bristol Channel in 1854. ' There is only the one edition, but there is a very late form of it in which the twenty-four plates are absent altogether' (F&W). THE PRESENT COPY IS AN APPARENTLY UNRECORDED VARIANT OF THIS ISSUE. It resembles F&W 68 but has the list of plates present and the sides and backstrip plain. The advertisements include a prospectus for 'British Sea Anemones' and ads for 'Marine Zoology', 'Devonshire Coast' , 'Aquarium' and others of the author's works. Witherby,, [1953]. 2 vols., roy. 4to., First Edition, First Issue, with 2 coloured frontispieces, 36 coloured plates, 76 monochrome plates on 42, a full-page map in the text, and a double-page map in red and blue with a full-page graph, some light marginal spotting to first leaves on each volume, fore-edges mildly spotted; original dark blue buckram, gilt back, blue tops, a very good, clean set in dustwrapper, the latter lightly browned and spotted at fold-ins. One of the finest of all modern county avifaunas, the set comprises vol I: Black-Throated Diver to Puffin; vol. II: Pallas's Sand-Grouse to Snow-Finch. The frontispieces and coloured plates are from paintings by the author. 'In 1953 Dr. James Harrison published 'The Birds of Kent', a comprehensive historical work in two volumes which goes into great detail on the occurrence of sub-species as well as full species. This book is illustrated with many photographs mostly of mounted specimens and coloured paintings by the author'. (Tate). This is the first issue binding of dark blue buckram (rather than the later cloth). The dustwrappers are cream printed in red and black. Tate (1985), p.94.

Roy. 8vo., First Edition thus, with decorative title-vignette and 60 engraved illustrations and facsimiles in the text; handsomely bound in contemporary green full calf, back with five raised bands tooled in gilt, second compartment lettered and ruled in gilt, all other compartments tooled in gilt, gilt edges, broad doublures tooled with floral procession in gilt, marbled endpapers, expertly rebacked with old backstrip laid down, a most attractive, internally spotless copy. The work as a whole comprises [1] 'The Natural History of Selborne'; [2] 'Observations on various Parts of Nature'; [3] 'A Naturalist's Calendar'; [4] 'The Antiquities of Selborne'; [5] 'Poems'; [6] 'Ten Letters from the Rev. Gilbert White to Robert Marsham 1790-1793', all of which have individual titles. The first work includes White's 'Advertisement'; the third work includes Dr. Aikin's Advertisement. The White-Marsham letters were first published in Harting's second edition (Bickers, 1876). When Swan Sonnenschein acquired the copyright to Bennett's edition the opportunity was taken to revise Bennett's notes and to illustrate the work by some of Bewick's engravings. The first Swan edition was published in 1887 and several times reissued culminating in this, the fourth and best Swan edition. A HANDSOME COPY OF AN IMPORTANT EDITION. Martin, p.152.
