The Virgin and Child in the heavens with Saints
The Virgin and Child in the heavens adored by St Luke, St Thomas Aquinas, St Petronio of Bologna, and St Jerome(?). Some angels making music on the top right corner. According to the BM (U,5.11) record of an earlier version of the present impression, Simonetta Stagni (1988) associated this engraving with a lost painting described by Malvasia in the Palazzo Comunale in Bologna. On the cartouche held by St Luke "SEQUENTIA / SANCTI EVA/GELII SECUN/DUM LUCAM. / IN ILLO TEM/PORE MISSUS / EST ANGELUS / GABRIEL A", on the book held by the sitting angel on the left: "SI TERRES/TRIA DAET / CELES / TIA" On the bottom, under the picture:"Alli Molti Ill.[ri] Sig[ri]: miei Pro[...] Oss.[mi]si Sig.[ri] Correttore, e Consoli dell'Alm. Colleggio/ de Sig. [ri] Notari di Bologna / del primo semestre 1679"; "Dom. Ma. Canutus Inu."; "Carolus Ant: Forus Inudit. D.D."l Etching; total: 400 x 278 mm, damaged along the borders, yet very nice impression. On the back in ink: 'Bajocchi n° 15, probably from a 17th/18th century dealer in Italy. PB01SS
