"Die Musik in Geschichte und Gegenwart (MGG) is the largest and most comprehensive German music encyclopedia, and among Western music reference sources, only The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians is comparable to it in size and scope. Friedrich Blume (1893-1975) was professor of musicology at the University of Kiel from 1938–1958. He was a student in Munich, Berlin and Leipzig, and taught in the last two of these for some years before being called to the chair in Kiel. Blume was appointed a member of the State Institute for German Music Research in 1935, which entrusted him with the "German Heritage of Music" series in 1939 and the publication of the magazine "Deutsche Musikkultur" until 1944. In 1942 he took over the chairmanship of the New Schütz Society. Also in 1942 Blume took up the suggestion of Karl Vötterle, the founder of the Bärenreiter-Verlag, to become their editor for the preparation of the Encyclopaedia Die Musik in Geschichte und Gegenwart (Music in History and Present). In 1948 he was elected to the presidency of the newly founded Internationalen Gesellschaft für Musikwissenschaft, where from 1958 to 1961 he worked as its president. He was also an organizer of the Internationale Vereinigung der Musikbibliotheken, Musikarchive und Musikdokumentationszentren (International Association of Music Libraries, Music Archives and Music Documentation Centers) and RISM, President of the International Heinrich Schütz Society, and Chairman of the Joseph Haydn Institute. He was awarded numerous honors and distinctions for his work. Blume’s long-awaited encyclopedia appeared as 14 volumes between 1949 and 1968. Der wohltätige Derwisch oder Die Schellenkappe (The Beneficient Dervish or The Fool’s Cap), first performed in Vienna in 1791, is a recently rediscovered German opera. As in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte, the libretto is by Emanuel Schikaneder and based on a fairy tale from Christoph Martin Wieland’s Dschinnistan, in case “The Princess with the Long Nose.” The collaborative music this for this three-act “Lust- und Zauberspiel mit Maschinen, Arien und Chören” (comic-magic play with [stage] machines, arias, and choruses) has been attributed to three composers in the surviving sources: Johann Baptist Henneberg, Benedikt Schack, and Franz Xaver Gerl. Additional music may have been composed by Schikaneder and perhaps Mozart, who contributed to the previous fairy-tale opera at Schikaneder’s theater, Der Stein der Weisen oder Die Zauberinsel (The Philosopher’s Stone or The Enchanted Island), first performed in 1790. Seven months later, the same playwright, singers, actors, and kapellmeister created Die Zauberflöte, which contains some roles parallel with Der wohltätige Derwisch. Der wohltätige Derwisch proved to be highly successful in Vienna and was also performed in various cities in Austria, Germany, Bohemia, Moravia, and Hungary as well as in St. Peters burg, Russia. Only excerpts appeared in print, however, and about twenty years after its premiere the opera vanished from the repertory..
