¶ In een eerdere fase van het werk van Warffemius werden de voorstellingen in zijn schilderijen en tekeningen vaak opgebouwd uit twee of meer onderdelen die elkaar herhalen, spiegelen, variëren, versterken of relativeren. Het zijn werken die de toeschouwer de vraag voorleggen om de optelsom van de elementen zelf te maken. In Warffemius' recente werk lijken planten, schimmels en vruchten zelf de compositie van het beeld ter hand te nemen. Wij krijgen een wereld te zien die nog niet volgroeid is, waarin levensvormen onder onze ogen evolueren. Bomen verzamelen miljarden een- en meercelligen, schimmels en insekten rondom hun wortels, waarmee zij de ideale habitat voor zichzelf en voor anderen creëren. Dit is een gebeuren zonder begin en zonder einde, een proces waarin klein en groot er niet meer toe doen, waarop de begrippen belangrijk en onbelangrijk niet langer toepasbaar zijn. Creatie bestaat niet - alles is co-creatie. Evolutie bestaat niet - alles is co-evolutie. In zijn recente tekeningen en schilderijen roept Warffemius een dergelijke, paralelle wereld-in-wording op.

Han Mes, Twee werelden.

¶ De meeste schilderijen en tekeningen in dit boek stammen uit de laatste jaren van de twintigste eeuw en de eerste twee jaar van de nieuwe eeuw. Ze geven een duidelijk beeld van wat Han Mes boeit. De vele landschappen uit deze periode getuigen van het Noord-Hollandse licht maar er zijn er ook enkele die de sfeer van Italië in zich dragen. Haar reizen naar Italië spelen een rol in haar herinnering. Het kleurgebruik is lichter geworden, optimistischer en ondersteunt de sferen van de vele ontmoetingen met mensen in haar werk. De ontmoetingen zijn soms afwachtend en stil, op zoek naar betekenis en contact, zoals de scènes in het atelier. De confrontaties van mensen buiten het atelier, in grote open ruimtes of in het landschap, zijn directer en heftiger. Mensen zijn daar onderweg, op reis of in een duidelijk gesprek verwikkeld, hebben een actievere houding en staan open voor de buitenwereld.

¶ Vanaf 1966 is Kees Thijn kunstschilder. Naast portretten en stillevens bestaat zijn werk voornamelijk uit symbolische en surrealistische taferelen. De omringende natuur met zijn wonderlijke verschijningsvormen en boeiende structuren vormen zijn voortdurende inspiratiebron. Thijn blijft zoeken naar wegen om voortdurend vernieuwingen in zijn werk aan te brengen. Zo kunnen zaken waarover hij zijn gedachten heeft laten gaan, zodanig worden verbeeld dat vorm en inhoud samensmelten tot een geheel. Thijn voelt zich het meest aangetrokken tot de figuratieve schilderkunst en het oeuvre varieert van realistische schilderkunst tot schilderijen waarbij eigen symbolen zijn gecombineerd om een bepaalde gedachte of situatie vorm te geven. Zijn belangstelling voor het surrealisme is duidelijk te zien; surrealistische elementen maken een wezenlijk onderdeel uit van het werk. The explanation for this can undoubtedly be found in the fact that a great part of his oeuvre - painted wall-hangings and chimney- and doorpieces - were nailed firmly in place in the rooms and halls for which they were made, unintentionally relegated to obscurity. In the field of painted wall-hangings Aart Schouman had a predecessor in his fellow townsman Abraham Busschop, who was in his turn, inspired by Melchior d'Hondecoeter. After a short period in which he painted religious and mythological subjects, Schouman proceeded to make his most important contribution in this field: the many colored bird-piece, with indigenous and exotic birds and mammals. Many of these wall-hangings were removed from their original 'homes' and subsequently sold to collectors abroad or lost. Only one set was preserved for the Netherlands, acquiring a place in the Royal Palace 'Huis ten Bosch'. Schouman's two main channels of expression were painting and drawing. Of the large number of oil paintings he made, only a few have been handed down to us. Examples of his draughtmanship however, have been been preserved in superabundance. There are numerous depictions in Indian ink, watercolor, and gouache of animals (especially birds) and plants, as well as topographical views. ¶ Ferdinand Bol wordt vaak in één adem genoemd met zijn wereldberoemde meester Rembrandt. Na zijn leertijd bij Rembrandt ontwikkelde hij zich echter tot één van de belangrijkst en succesvolste schilders van zijn tijd. In zijn eigen tijd werd Bol wellicht beschouwd als succesvoller dan Rembrandt. Niet alleen de kwaliteit van zijn werk, ook zijn familiale banden en geslaagde netwerkstrategie droegen bij aan zijn succes. Ferdinand Bol was zo succesvol dat hij het zich kon veroorloven om te gaan wonen aan de Keizersgracht 672, tegenwoordig Museum Van Loon. In dat huis bracht hij ook een grote kunstcollectie onder, met werken van Rembrandt, Rubens, Ruisdael en vele andere meesters. In het boek, dat ter gelegenheid van de gelijknamige tentoonstelling in Museum Van Loon wordt gepubliceerd, gaan auteurs Tonko Grever, Willem te Slaa en Quirine van Aerts in op de sociale status van de schilder, het huis waarin hij woonde en de kunstcollectie die hij daar bijeenbracht.

¶ Since the early 1960s, Bonies has worked exclusively with geometric shapes and the primary colours red, yellow, blue, plus green and white if required. These colour elements emerge according to a mathematical system, and he then arranges them. Colour and form and the space between are, for Bonies, the building blocks for constructions that speak for themselves and are also in a relationship with the surrounding space. In his oeuvre, now spanning some sixty years, form and colour have been completely liberated from any servitude to descriptive depiction or allusion: Concrete Art, it is what you see. Bob Bonies applies his approach of reducing things to their essence also to publications about his work. Since the 1960s he has insisted that every catalogue, art book, newspaper or magazine are illustrated not with photographs of his paintings, but with graphic representations. To see, in this way, 220 paintings by Bonies over six decades makes this an unique publication, which is therefore a work of art in itself.
