¶ Verzamelaar en kunstpublicist Ruud Lapré ontdekte dat er in zijn netwerk meerdere personen zijn die een respectabele collectie van werken van Eugène Brands (1913-2002) in hun bezit hebben. Vanuit dit gegeven ontstond bij hem het idee om hierover een boek te publiceren. Behalve bekendheid geven aan het werk van Eugène Brands in deze veelal verborgen collecties van particuliere verzamelaars, wil het boek ook een licht werpen op de relatie die elk van hen met de kunstenaar en/of zijn werk heeft (gehad). In meer algemene zin geeft het boek daarmee een interessante kijk op wat verzamelaars van kunst beweegt: niet alleen wat ze verzamelen, maar vooral hoe en waarom. Lapré heeft voor het boek tien particuliere verzamelaars van het werk van Brands geïnterviewd. Hans de Bruijn - bekend van de twee Atelier-boeken - maakte voor het boek van elke verzamelaar een prachtig fotoportret. Vaak wordt Eugène Brands in één adem genoemd met de CoBrA-beweging. Toch behoorde hij maar heel kort tot deze groep. Na de roemruchte gezamenlijke tentoonstelling in het Stedelijk Museum te Amsterdam, in november 1949, nam hij reeds afscheid van CoBrA. Met zijn zeer persoonlijke opvattingen over de schilderkunst was Brands nu eenmaal veel meer een solist. Zo was hij zeer geïnteresseerd in primitieve culturen. Dat was wél een typisch CoBrA-kenmerk, in zijn geval mede bepaald door het feit dat zijn dochter Eugénie toen een peuter was. Jarenlang liet hij zich hierdoor inspireren. Prachtige kleine schilderijen, meestal olieverf op papier, waren het resultaat. In de jaren zestig verruilde Brands de figuratie voor abstractie en schilderde vanaf toen zijn zo karakteristieke grote kleurvlakken - 'van een ondoordringbare wattige substantie' zoals CoBrA-historica Willemijn Stokvis schrijft.

Peasants and Proverbs: Pieter Brueghel The Younger as Moralist and Entrepreneur.

¶ This catalogue accompanies an exhibtion at the Barber Institute of Fine Arts that will shine a spotlight on Pieter Brueghel the Younger (1564 - 1638), an artist who was hugely successful in his lifetime but whose later reputation has been overshadowed by that of his famous father, Pieter Bruegel the Elder (c.1525 - 1569). Peasants and Proverbs: Pieter Brueghel the Younger as Moralist and Entrepreneur shares recent research into the Barber's comical yet enigmatic little painting, Two Peasants Binding Firewood, setting out fresh insights and offering a new appreciation of a figure whose prodigious output and business skills firmly established and popularised the distinctive 'Brueghelian' look of Netherlandish peasant life. Born in Brussels, Pieter Brueghel the Younger was just five years old when his renowned father died prematurely. Clearly talented, by the time he was around 20 years old, Brueghel the Younger was already registered as a master in Antwerp's Guild of Saint Luke. Between 1588, the year of his marriage, and 1626, he took on nine apprentices, demonstrating that he had established a successful studio. His workshop produced an abundance of paintings, ranging from exact copies of famous compositions by his father, to pastiches and more inventive compositions that further promoted the distinctive Bruegelian 'family style', usually focused on scenes of peasant life. He was, as a consequence, later deemed a second-rate painter, capable of only producing derivative works. This exhibition and book highlight how a more sophisticated understanding is now emerging of a creative and capable artist, and a savvy entrepreneur, who exploited favourable market conditions from his base in cosmopolitan Antwerp. From this deeper understanding of his practice, his favoured subjects and the market for them, we gain a more profound and compelling insight into the society in which he operated and its preoccupations and passions. A dozen other versions of Two Peasants Binding Firewood exist and, by examining some of them alongside the Barber painting, and using the insights gleaned from recent conservation work and technical analysis, the exhibition and book will explore how Brueghel the Younger operated his studio to produce and reproduce paintings, and the extent to which the entire enterprise was motivated by trends in the contemporary art market.

As he was struggling to make a living, Bonvin took over his father's inn in Vaugirard, while continuing to paint watercolours. His work, depicting wild flowers, still lifes and views of the still rural and working-class plain exhibit a deep sincerity. This catalogue raisonné is introduced by a series of essays, the outcome of intensive research that sheds new light on the life and art of Bonvin. Weisberg delivers two essays, a study of his career, and an exploration of contemporary receptions to his art. Luijten's essay questions the artistic inspiration that Bonvin drew upon. Briggs considers the transatlantic appeal of Bonvin's works whilst Guichané and Quentin explore his character and artistic practice.
