A very scarce and concise history of the Napoleon Bonaparte's Jena Campaign, in which he defeated Prussia, with ten folding maps to rear of text. First and only edition, very scarce. Illustration includes ten folding maps, some of which are in colour, which are loosely inserted into a packet which is adhered to the rear paste down. This is a history of Napoleon Bonaparte's military campaigns of 1806, with this work focusing upon the Battle of Jena. In this year, the Fourth Coalition took up arms against him because Prussia was worried about growing French influence. However, Napoleon swiftly defeated Prussia through the Battle of Jena, as well as Auerstedt, and was able to ultimately defeat the Russians in 1807. Contents include 'The Opposing Armies', 'Command and Administration', 'The Prussian Plans' and 'The Movement on Jena&apos. Written by Lieut. Col. H. M. E. Brunker, who wrote a range of works on Napoleon's military campaigns. Collated, complete. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, generally smart. Very unusual to find a complete set of this work with all volumes first editions. Every volume is the first edition of the work, with no subsequent printings or editions stated. Complete in three volumes. With a page of publisher's advertisements to the rear of volumes one and two and an errata slip tipped in to volume one. Profusely illustrated with many maps graphs and illustrations. Volume one contains two hundred and twenty eight illustrations, maps and graphs. Volume two contains two hundred and twelve illustrations maps and graphs and volume three contains eighty five illustrations graphs and diagrams. Arthur Graham Butler was a physician and medical historian. In 1912 he joined the Australian Medical Army Medical Corps, becoming a medical officer at the Moreton Regiment. Butler was one of the first boats to arrive at Gallipoli and is credited by other soldiers for his energy and bravery. After leaving the Army in 1920, Butler resumed private practice. In 1923, against his wishes, but with a sense of public duty, Butler began writing the official history of the Australian Army Medical Services in the war with the complete three volumes taking twenty years to complete. Butler was responsible for all of the writing, aside from two sections of the first volume which were written by R. M. Downes, F.A. Maguire and R. W. Cilento. The work itself reflects his courage and meticulousness in the war, with the work highlighting a number of extremely important problems as a guide to policy and management in the future, with every claim properly source and quantified. The works are considered among some of the most important war history texts of Western culture and are wide-ranging, highly critical and extremely valuable to medical and military history. With a manuscript by Johnston tucked in. This first edition copy of Lieutenant J. R. Byrne's account of the New Zealand Artillery in the First World War was previously owned by Brigadier-General George Napier Johnston, who was Commander of the artillery for the New Zealand and Australian divisions during the Great War. Johnson provides an introduction to the work in the text, but in this copy, one can find his pencil inscription to the recto of the front endpaper, some marginalia, and a thirteen page typescript manuscript tucked in. With twenty eight plates and ten maps, including eight folding maps. The First World War broke out whilst Johnston was serving in New Zealand as Inspector of Artillery. He joined the New Zealand Expeditionary Force that was raised for service abroad, and commanded the artillery of the New Zealand and Australian divisions at Gallipoli and on the Western Front. The volume is divided into two, and describes the clashes on the Western Front after a discussion of the Gallipoli campaign. Entitled The Story of the New Zealand Artillery in the European War, Johnston's manuscript begins by discussing the formation and composition of the division, which included several brigades, artillery, engineers, and army service corps. He then describes their move to Cairo in early April 1915, the mayhem of landing at Anzac cove, before discussing the NZEF's tactics and manoeuvres in the Gallipolli campaign. In the publisher's original blue cloth binding. Externally, rather worn. The cloth is fraying at a tear that extends three quarters of the way down the front joint. Rubbed to the boards, and missing a little cloth to the head and tail of the spine. The rear hinge is starting, and is a little tender. Internally, firmly bound. With the bookplate of one John Foster to the front pastedown of all volumes. The bookplate features the family crest as well as two ships. The motto 'Amor Omnia Vincit' translates as Love Conquers All. To the bottom of the bookplate is written 'Thacker Spink, Calcutta&apos. This work was originally published between 1742 and 1744. It was still being issued up to a hundred years after his death. John Campbell was a Scottish historian. He had written several popular historical works before his The Lives of British Admirals and Other Eminent British Seamen. However, this work was his most popular. It was originally four volumes and was expanded into eight by John Berkenhout and Redhill York. In uniform full calf bindings. Externally, worn. Particularly to the spines and joints. Singe marks to several spines of multiple volumes, Worst to volume II which has singing to the rear board as well. Heavy rubbing to the head and tail of all spines as well as patches to the boards. Crack to rear joint of volume II. Front hinge to volume III is tender with cords showing. Crack to head of front joint to volumes IV and V. Small crack to head of rear joint to volume V. Volume VI is lacking backstrip. Rear joint to volume VI is tender and front joint starting but firm, as is hinge. Front joint to volume VIII is cracked and starting but firm. Front hinge to volume VIII is slightly strained but firm. Internally, all volumes are firmly bound. Water damage internally to volume VI resulting in tide marks throughout and cockling, not affecting text.
