This was a lengthy battle and siege on a strongly fortified Confederate position on the Mississippi River, which the Union Army felt was crucial in controlling access to the river. GOOD condition. Moderate to heavy soiling to the covers, with uneven darkening and fading. Minor scuffing. Some fraying to the cloth along the extremities. Spine faded and discolored, with some areas of discoloration to the rear cover. Binding cocked. Interior hinges weakening. Text block solid with minor scattered soiling and very light scattered foxing. Faint to moderate dampstaining present along the page extremities throughout the book. Good/No Jacket.

A work containing descriptions of various battles throughout English history from, as the title states, William the Conqueror to the Battle of Inkermann. Each description is broken down into days and dates of battles, offering details on the important events of the battles, as well as detailing who were considered the heroes of the battles. In FAIR condition. Cloth on the spine is VERY WORN, being considerably browned and lacking about an inch of cloth at the head and foot. This exposes the binding beneath and is unsightly. Cloth split along rear hinge, with the backstrip reattached with archival glue. General minor fading and scuffing to the covers, with a spot of heavy fading at the lower front corner. Extremities moderately scuffed with some fraying and bumping present especially at the corners. Binding cracked the front interior hinge and at page 224/25. Cover is attached to the text block but is weakened. Frontispiece and one page of ads preceding it are DETACHED and laid in. Numerical pencil notation on the title page. Text block solid with some darkening to the pages and minor scattered soiling. Page xiii torn at the fore edge, affecting some of the text. Fair/No Jacket.

With a large colored, fold out map depicting the retreat of the French Army from Moscow, as well as portrait of Prince Koutousoff attached to the front pastedown endpaper. Collated with text complete, although perhaps lacking the half title and a blank endpaper. LACKING one map. The half title may be on the reverse of the portrait. A detailed account of Napoleon's attempted conquest of Russia, ultimately unsuccessful, and resulting in a retreat that decimated much of his army. This includes Napoleon's occupation of Moscow and Russia's refusal to surrender, detailing Napoleon's failed attempt at burning the Kremlin, as well as Russian forces retaking of Moscow. FAIR/GOOD condition. Light fading and soiling to the covers. The interior is solid, with a few new endpapers present, of thicker paper stock. Some chipping and minor loss to the title page and contents page along the extremities, with no loss of text. The original text block appears to have cracked in the gutter at the contents page, but is solid and intact. Heavy browning to the paper, with scattered soiling. Heavy browning/staining to the upper 1/3 of the pages of the first half of the book. Page edges soiled. Several ownership signatures in pencil present. The map is backed with white cloth, with several tears evident along the folds. Moderate browning to the map, with scattered foxing, soiling and a few small stains. Fair/No Jacket.
