The Bomber Mafia: A Dream, a Temptation, and the Longest Night of the Second World War
New York: Little, Brown and Company, 2021. First Edition. Hardcover. ISBN: 0316296619. DJ and boards show very light shelf wear, one dog-eared page.; A bright, solid book, dustjacket in Mylar, unclipped.; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 240 pages; " the bombing of Tokyo on the deadliest night of the war was the brainchild of General Curtis LeMay, whose brutal pragmatism and scorched-earth tactics in Japan cost thousands of civilian lives, but may have spared even more by averting a planned US invasion. In The Bomber Mafia, Gladwell asks, “Was it worth it?” Things might have gone differently had LeMay’s predecessor, General Haywood Hansell, remained in charge. Hansell believed in precision bombing, but when he and Curtis LeMay squared off for a leadership handover in the jungles of Guam, LeMay emerged victorious, leading to the darkest night of World War II. Running low on fuel, the two bombers and four of the Lightning fighters were forced to crash-land on the coast of Greenland. All personnel survived the landings and were eventually rescued, however the aircraft were abandoned to the elements. Over 50 years later, and expedition was mounted by Pat Epps and Richard Taylor to possibly recover one or more of the aircraft, by this time under more than 200 feet of snow and ice. This book is an account of the search, discovery and eventual recovery of one of the P-38's by one of the expedition members.. Very Good+ in Very Good+ dust jacket .

MCCAFFERY, DAN
Billy Bishop Canadian Hero
Toronto, ON: Lorimer, 1988. Second Edition. Hardcover. ISBN: 1550280953. Signed by Author; DJ has short tear top fore edge, embossing on half title page. Signed by author on half title page ; A bright solid, book DJ in Mylar ; 227 pages; New edition of Billy Bishop: Canadian Hero, military aviation expert Dan McCaffery sets the record straight about one of this country's most famous and controversial figures. Fiercely ambitious and driven by an undisguised hatred of his enemies, Bishop played hard and fought even harder. A skilled pilot and a crack shot, he quickly established himself as the "top gun" of the Allied air forces and by 1918 had secured his position as the most decorated war hero in Canadian history. Yet questions remain. Some of Bishop's fellow pilots were put off by his grandstanding and also suspected he was deliberately inflating his number of "kills." Since then, the same claim has been made by many others. That issue is at the heart of this book.. Near Fine in Very Good dust jacket .

Boards and DJ show very light shelf wear. ; A bright, solid book, dustjacket in Mylar, unclipped.; 9.2 X 6.3 X 1.0 inches; 174 pages; "Squadron Leader McGlashan reflects honestly on his enthralling and diverse RAF career, one that began with the rag and tube of Hawker biplanes in 1939 and closed in the jet era of the late 1950s. Shot down over the beaches of Dunkirk in heated aerial combat, we follow the footsteps of the nineteen year old along the debris-littered sands and beyond. From the protection of vulnerable convoys to the pioneering days of night-fighting and airborne radar, McGlashan is in the midst of the action. Flying in support of the ill-fated landing at Dieppe and on clandestine night operations before D-Day, he takes an active role in some of the RAF’s most significant operations of World War Two. Interspersed throughout are tales of camaraderie and humour. Away from the front line, McGlashan was seconded to BOAC to fly airliners out of Cairo, tasked to ferry all manner of aircraft at the war’s end and serve Cyprus at the height of a very nasty campaign.".
