¶ Built in 1610 during the reign of James I and remodeled in 1637-9 by the future first Earl of Dysart, 'Ham House' and its gardens have endured through centuries of English history while remaining representative of the styles and culture of the original inhabitants. It is one of the few places where Caroline decor - as developed by British architect Inigo Jones and familiar to Peter Paul Rubens and Anthony van Dyck - can still be appreciated. To mark the 400th anniversary of one of the most famous houses in Europe, eighteen internationally recognized scholars join National Trust curators in documenting the history of Ham House and its collections. The new discoveries, reattributions, and revelations of the contributors are accompanied by specially commissioned photography of the house and its contents. Ë partir de 1880, il entreprit de faire de l'ameublement de son hôtel une vitrine de la création française des origines au XVIIIe siècle, rivalisant dans ses achats auprès des antiquaires parisiens avec Richard Wallace qui constituait alors la célèbre collection londonienne. Après sa mort survenue en 1894, sa femme Nélie André, dont il avait fait sa légataire universelle, continua à enrichir les collections de son hôtel parisien et de sa résidence des champs à Chaalis. Elle mourut en 1912, ayant légué ses demeures et ses collections à l'Institut de France qui, l'année suivante, ouvrit au public le musée Jacquemart-André. ¶ En avril 1808, Napoléon convoque à Bayonne Charles IV et Ferdinand VII d'Espagne. Le père et le fils se disputent la couronne et Napoléon les départage en nommant roi son propre frère Joseph, rappelé du royaume de Naples. C'est en vain que Charles IV a apporté dans ses bagages un cadeau somptueux : le surtout ou centre de table créé pour la 'Casa del Príncipe' du palais de l'Escorial. Ce surtout, qui exprimait symboliquement la puissance de la monarchie des Bourbons, était un magnifique exemple du savoir-faire de la manufacture madrilène du Buen Retiro. Cet objet spectaculaire, constitué de pierres dures enrichies de bronze doré, d'intailles et de camées, fut incompris et dédaigné par les Français. Décision fut prise de démanteler l'ensemble, de restaurer certains éléments et d'en transformer la plupart. Intervinrent alors le sculpteur mosaïste Belloni, le bronzier Thomire et les horlogers Lepaute et Bailly. Les éléments provenant du surtout dépecé furent répartis entre les Tuileries, Fontainebleau, Trianon, Meudon et le Garde-Meuble impérial.
