1934. WALD, George. LOT OF SCIENTIFIC OFFPRINTS OF NOBEL PRIZE WINNER 1967. 81 offprints, 1934-1974, from various scientific and medical journals, including Nature, Science, American Journal of Ophthalmology, Journal of General Physiology, Journal of Ophthalmology Society of America, as well as a few textbook chapters and conference proceedings. All in fine or near fine condition, some with a few external notations (Wald's, most likely). Some of the papers are collaborations with one or more co-authors, including Ruth Hubbard and T. Yoshizawa. Primarily concerning the molecular biology of vision; the topics include rhodopsin and iodopsin in humans and animals, Vitamin A deficiency and night blindness, color blindness, visual pigments in human and animal retinas, violet receptors in human vision, the chemistry of rod vision, and more. To which are added, The Naturalist's Calendar Miscellaneous Observations, and Poems. A new edition, with engravings. In two volumes. London: Printed for White, Cochrane, and Co. (et al.), 1813. Mitford's royal octavo edition of 1813, issued the same year as the quarto edition. It is called the Mitford edition because the notes of the Rev. John Mitford, of Benhall, make their first appearance in White's "History." Illustrated with the 4 engraved prints that are called for, including the hand-colored print of the "Hybrid Bird," plus an additional 17 plates from other sources. Two octavo volumes. 21 x 12.5 cm. Contemporary bindings of three-quarter, medium brown calf with marbled sides, gilt-lettered labels and blind-stamped deoration on spines, all edges speckled. Bindings show general light shelf wear, though a bit more at heels and crowns, and labels are abraded and, in one instance, chipped. Text and plates are clean. Included among the extra illustrations are Gainsborough's portrait of Thomas Penant, engraved by J. Byrne, and prints of birds and animals found in the Selborne area. Three of the plates are taken from Christie's 1813 edition of Goldsmith's "Animated Nature." Five others are engraved by J. Pass and dated 1798-1803, three of which list G. Edwards as the artist. Binding tight. Occasional pencil notes in margins and underlining. Ex-library with a few small inkstamps, no external markings. Title page partially detached at bottom edge. Complete. Zimmerman was a student of von Haller and a relation by marriage; he later was known for his influential philosophical works, including Von der Einsamkeit (On Solitude), which went through many editions. Includes a bibliography of von Haller's works to 1755 at rear of volume. As for von Haller, "the quantity of work achieved [by Haller] in the seventeen years during which he occupied his Gottingen professorship was immense. The classwork aside, there was the newly organizing a botanical garden, an anatomical theatre and museum, an obstetrical school, and similar institutions, while he carried on without interruption those original investigations in botany and physiology, the results of which are preserved in the numerous works associated with his name; he continued also to persevere in his youthful habit of poetical composition, while at the same time he conducted a monthly journal (the Gottingische gelehrte Anzeigen), to which he is said to have contributed twelve thousand articles relating to almost every branch of human knowledge. He also warmly interested himself in most of the religious questions, both ephemeral and permanent, of his day; and the erection of the Reformed church in Gottingen was mainly due to his unwearied energy.
