¶ In 1971 verscheen het geruchtmakende 'Wie is van hout' waarmee Jan Foudraine aanknoopte bij de kritische psychiatrie. Zoals bekend, volgde op zijn succes een crisis en trok hij naar Poona en verdiepte zich in mystiek. De gevestigde psychiatrie bezag dit met veel argwaan. In 'Bunkerbouwers' (1997) trok hij zijn lijn door en in deze publicatie overziet hij zijn positie binnen de psychiatrie, onder meer naast Laing, Jung, en Sullivan. De psychiatrie is op een biomedische, dus verkeerde, weg. Want de clienten hebben geen persoonlijkheidsstoornissen maar komen in grote moeilijkheden doordat ze een sociaal faillissement beleven. Daar kan ook het lichamelijk functioneren onder gaan lijden. Foudraine's lijn voert naar een nieuw paradigma van de persoonlijkheid. Vertrekpunt: Laing's woord 'metanoia'. Foudraine geeft, onder andere met verwijzingen naar Parsons en zijn concept 'awakened life', aan, wat hij hieronder verstaat. Hiermee verdwijnt zijn geloof in 'het ik'/ 'de persoon' als afzonderlijke identiteit! De consequenties voor psychiater/psychiatrie worden vrij summier aangestipt. Het boek gaat in tegen de huidige ontwikkeling in de psychiatrie: DSM-classificatie, kortlopende behandelingen, medicatie; en tegen 'spiritualisme' (goeroes)
