SAVA, GEORGE.
Patients' Progress.
London: Faber and Faber Limited, 1952. 1st edition. "Takes us on a medical journey round the world, from the hut surgeries and 'magical' methods of the Balkans in the nineteen-twenties to the latest streamlined, chromium-plated, 'gadgetized' hospitals of the United States..the theatrical finesse of the French practitioner, the academic god-like hauteur of the German, and the devoted - if at times somewhat dull - integrity of the British.." G/G.** "Described as a "Russian exile", he was born George Alexis Milkomanov Milkomane on October 15, 1903. He wrote approximately 120 books under the pseudonyms George Sava, George Bankoff, George Borodin, George Braddon, Peter Conway, Alec Redwood, and others. His grandfather was a Bulgarian who, at a time when Bulgaria was part of the Ottoman Empire, migrated to Russia. He was a Lieutenant in the White Russian Navy when he was seventeen. He was forced to perform emergency surgery without any medical training that saved the life of a comrade which induced him to pursue a career in medicine and to become a surgeon".(wiki).

Wardrop was associated with Thomas Wakley in the founding of The Lancet in 1823, for which he first wrote savage articles and, later, witty and scurrilous lampoons in his column 'Intercepted Letters'. The letters, under the pseudonym 'Brutus', were thinly disguised as by leading London surgeons, 'accidentally' revealing their nepotism, venality and incompetence. There was enough truth in them to make the parodies sting. He was later rehabilitated with the Royal College of Surgeons of England, becoming a Fellow in 1843.." - See Wikipedia. Full title reads: "Historical sketch of the opinions entertained by medical men respecting the varieties and the secondary occurrence of small-pox ; with observations on the nature and extent of the security afforded by vaccination against attacks of that disease : in a letter to Sir James M'Grigor.
