12°, geheel perkamenten band uit de tijd met originele sluit-veters, (24)+558+(2) pag. Geillustreerd met gegraveerde titelpagina door J. Hackius (met waarschijnlijk het portret van de medicus J.F. Fernel (1497-1558)). Oud eigendomsmerk in handschrift: 'Aegidius Lobinus Spadanus, 69'. Willems 797 ('assez rare'). Aulus Aurelius Cornelius Celsus (25BC-AD 50), bijgenaamd Cicero Medicorum was na Hippocrates een der belangrijkste medici uit de oudheid. De eerste gedrukte editie dateert uit 1478 (Florence) en is een der eerste gedrukte medische boeken. Veel aandacht o.a. voor tandheelkunde en plastische chirurgie! Deze editie uit 1657 werd verzorgd door de medicus J.A. van der Linden (1609-1664). Holtrop, 1804, 1st edition, xxiv,308+(4) pages, 5 engraved fold out plates of the human skull and brain (professional reenforcements to edges of plates), modern half linen binding, some staining on first thre pages including titlepage, otherwose clean bloc, plates are clean too, commentary of Jacob Elisa Doornik (1777-1837) on the findings of Franz Josef Gall (1758 - 1828) who was a German neuroanatomist, physiologist, and pioneer in the study of the localization of mental functions in the brain. Claimed as the founder of phrenology, Gall was an early and important researcher in his fields. His contributions to the field of neuropsychology were controversial at the time and now widely referred to as pseudoscience. However, Gall's study of phrenology helped establish psychology as a science, contributed to the emergence of the naturalistic approach to the study of man, and played an important part in the development of evolutionist theories, anthropology, and sociology. Doornik studied in Leiden and became a doctor in the Netherlands and later in Dutch East Indies (Batavia, Nederlandsch Indie), he was forced to leave because he opposed the colonial system, he died in New Orleans. Amsterdam/Leeuwarden, Jan ten Hoorn/Pieter Ruirds, 1709, 8vo., full parchment binding with blind tooled decoration on front and back, [4]+320+112 pp. The book has been poorly rebound with old parchment, modern cardboard and leather on the inside of the spine. As a result the book is diffucult to open properly. Also some tape has been used near the end of the book and there are some stains. Compared to the STCN description, this copy is incomplete. The last signature in this copy is Gg, in the STCN description the last signature is Oo. With engraved titlepage, woodcut printer's mark on titlepage and some decorative initials and endpieces. Interesting book on herbal remedies and magnetic influences. It brings together Digby’s Choice Receipts and his Powder of Sympathy, excerpts by N. Papinius and a major work by Athanasius Kircher on magnetic forces and the influence of the moon, sun and planets on the earth. The Powder of Sympathy was a form of sympathetic magic popular in 17th Century Europe, whereby a remedy was applied to the weapon that had caused a wound in the hope of healing the injury it had made. The method was first proposed by Rudolf Goclenius, Jr. and was later expanded upon by Sir Kenelm Digby in the present work. Digby’s publication went through at least 29 editions in French, English, Latin, Dutch and German.From the collection of Jelle Kaspersma and Alie Vinke (20 Maart 2009, with a note in Frisian about having rebound the book: "Folslein op'en nij yn'e bân set")

His work on insects demonstrated that the various phases during the life of an insect-egg, larva, pupa, and adult-are different forms of the same animal. As part of his anatomical research, he carried out experiments on muscle contraction. In 1658, he was the first to observe and describe red blood cells. He was one of the first people to use the microscope in dissections, and his techniques remained useful for hundreds of years.

Geillustreerd met een fraaie gegraveerde titelpagina met afb. van het onderwijs aan een doofstomme en 36 paginagrote gravures met afbeeldingen van tong en keel. De laatste pagina's hebben lichte schade door inktvlek. Verhandeling over het onderwijs aan doofstommen om te leren liplezen en spreken. O.a. deelt Van Helmont mee dat het spreken van de Hebreeuwse taal gemakkelijk is voor liplezen. De verhandeling van J.C. Amman, pp. 145-200, heeft een eigen titelpagina: Surdus loquens of de doove sprekende, Amsterdam 1697.

Schones exemplar der Unberechtiger Nachdruck der erstausgabe von selben Jahr von dieses Hauptwerk des berühmten Naturwissenschaftler, The most widely known of his many writings is the treatise entitled Makrobiotik oder Die Kunst, das menschliche Leben zu verlängern (1796), which was translated into many languages, this treatise on how to prolong the human life is written by Christoph Wilhelm Friedrich Hufeland (12 August 1762, Langensalza - 25 August 1836, Berlin) who was a German physician, naturopath and writer. He is famous as the most eminent practical physician of his time in Germany and as the author of numerous works displaying extensive reading and a cultivated critical faculty.
