BEAUMONT Francis
The Spanish Curate. A Comedy. BRIGHT, CRISP COPY
Printed for J.T. [Jacob Tonson] and sold by J. Brown at the Black Swan without Temple-Bar,, 1718. 4to., on laid paper, some mild age- and damp-marking to several leaves; strongly bound in twentieth century boards, paper label, a bright, crisp copy. Although attributed here to Beaumont and Fletcher, later scholarship increasingly favours authorship by Fletcher and Massinger. The play, one of the finest Restoration comedies, was first performed in 1622 with the first licensed edition following in 1647. We have not been able to trace another eighteenth century edition of this work on its own. Tannenbaum, 501; see CBEL I, 635.
