AUSTEN Jane
Northanger Abbey and Persuasion. [Bentley's Standard Novels reissue.] BRIGHT, CLEAN COPY IN UNRESTORED PUBLISHER'S BINDING
Richard Bentley,, 1856. 8vo., with engraved frontispiece (original tissue guard present), engraved and printed titles, frontispiece and titles minimally age-soiled; original green pebble-grain cloth, sides elaborately framed and blocked in blind, gilt back, primrose endpapers, uncut, corners just a fraction turned, tiny nick at tail of backstrip, joints tender (but binding entirely sound), a very good, bright, clean, crisp copy in wholly unrestored publisher's binding. Published as Volume 4 in Bentley's Standard Novels edition (series first issued in 1833; Gilson D4) but complete in itself. Complete with half-title to first work and separate printed title to second work. The frontispiece, by Greatbatch after Pickering, is still dated 1833 as is usual with SN reissues. Gilson notes that later issues 'generally dispense with the engraved title' (which is however present here) and that 'the volume numbers and the indication that this is a collected set appear only on the spines of the original cloth binding'. The present binding differs from Gilson's purple (he records green only for the original issues of 1833), but see his comment on D7 as a whole 'so few of these reprints survive in libraries, and even fewer in original condition, that the following details must be incomplete'. A BRIGHT, CLEAN CRISP COPY OF A VERY SCARCE WORK. Gilson D7 1856.

AUSTEN Jane
The Novels of Jane Austen. Volume III. Mansfield Park. The Text based on Collation of the Early Editions. With Notes Indexes and Illustrations from contemporary Sources. [Third Edition thus].
Oxford University Press,, [1948]. 8vo., Third Edition thus [Fourth Impression], with 2 plates as frontispiece, 7 plates and 3 full-page type-facsimiles, small neat signature on front free endpaper; original green cloth, gilt back, a very good, bright, clean copy. Initially published in 1923 as Vol. III of Chapman's five-volume edition of The Novels. The 'illustrations from contemporary sources' are a new feature, augmented here by type-facsimiles of the first volume of the edition of 1814, and all three volumes of the second edition of 1816. Each of Chapman's five volumes is complete in itself, with introductory note and considerable bibliographical and literary apparatus. Importantly the present text was not set up specifically for the 1923 edition but reprinted from the Oxford edition of 1912 (see Gilson E133). Gilson E150 (recording the five-volume collection).

AUSTEN Jane
The Novels of Jane Austen. Emma. The Text based on Collation of the Early Editions by R.W. Chapman. With Notes Indexes and Illustrations from contemporary Sources. Volume IV. Third Edition [Third Impression; this volume only]. BRIGHT, CLEAN COPY
Clarendon Press, Oxford,, [1946]. 8vo., Third Edition, Third Impression, with frontispiece, 9 plates and several pages of facsimiles in the text; original series binding of green cloth, gilt back, a very good, bright, clean copy. Chapman's masterly edition of the novels was first published in a limited edition of five volumes in 1923. It was the first based on carefully collated texts and the first to feature illustrations from contemporary sources. Demand far outstripped the limited audience and a 'second edition' (in reality a second printing on cheaper stock) was issued in 1926. A 'third edition' (as here) was published in 1933, but since it is produced from the original plates it is still technically a third printing. This third edition, several times re-issued, preserves the three-volume structure of the first edition of 1816, adding frontispieces to each volume together with the other plates and facsimiles, and Chapman's extensive notes and explanatory articles. See Gilson, E150.
