Zie; Kruseman: 'De Fransche wetten op de Hollandsche drukpers, 1806-1814', in: Bijdragen tot de geschiedenis van den Nederlandschen boekhandel (Amsterdam 1890) II, p.277-286 Van Hattum 12; Saalmink I, p.819 Het grote, van vaderlandsliefde blakende dichtstuk 'De Hollandsche Natie', gepubliceerd toen Nederland nog onder Franse bezetting verkeerde, maakte Helmers in de ogen van veel landgenoten tot een held die durfde spreken "in een tijd toen spreken gevangenschap of den dood kon brengen" (Kalff). Het werk was in 1811 gereed gekomen, maar kon pas in de tweede helft van 1812 worden gedrukt door de bemoeienissen van de Franse censuur. Dat het überhaupt mocht worden gedrukt, verbaasde Kruseman later: "vreemd genoeg: het handschrift vond geen andere tegenkanting dan dat er in den eersten zang 16, in den tweeden 86, en in den derden 48, dus te zamen 150 regels geschrapt werden". Daarnaast zijn in een honderdtal regels veranderingen aangebracht, maar een groot deel daarvan betreft door de dichter zelf gewenste verbeteringen. Toen het werk eindelijk was verschenen - bij Allart, Helmers' uitgever Immerzeel durfde de uitgave niet aan - bleek de censor in Parijs nog een aanstotelijke passage bovenaan pagina 56 over het hoofd te hebben gezien, maar van de 1300 gedrukte exemplaren bevonden zich toen nog maar 250 in Allarts magazijn; alleen die exemplaren kregen een verbeterblad. Ondanks deze aanpassingen waren de Fransen achteraf zeer ontevreden over de verschijning van het boek. Hoewel er geen direct bewijs voor is, acht Van Hattum het niet onaannemelijk dat er een arrestatiebevel tegen Helmers werd uitgevaardigd, waarvan de uitvoering echter werd doorkruist door het overlijden van de dichter op 26 maart 1813. Vage vochtvlek[ hier en daar] in rechter onderhoek. Very Good/No Jacket.

Still a collectable item, in this well printed Cape edition. Good/Good.
