Includes a centerfold comic by Harry Grant Dart depicting farm life in the US if Roosevelt wins, but suggests voting for Taft anyway Dart was an American illustrator known for his futuristic aviation illustrations. Very short piece on US politics and how the two parties treat African-Americans in the North and South. GOOD condition. Presumably disbound from a larger work, with roughness along the spine. Minor toning and soiling to the covers. Some creasing and scuffing along the corners and extremities. Magazine splitting along the spine, making the piece holding together somewhat tenuously. Good .

Of note in this issue is an article "All Along the Shore" featuring photographs of various yachts, including a few by C.E. Bolles. With a frontispiece photo of the Fleet of the New York Yacht Club. Also present is an article on Maine lobstermen; a five page song, including music and words, on football, called "The Winning Touchdown" with words and music by Juliet and Gilbert Tompkins; an article on the American stage, or theater scene, including photos of Evelyn Millard, George Alexander, Isabel Irving, Katherine Florence, Fritz Williams, Georgia Cayvan, Maud Odell, and Ada Rehan. GOOD condition. Heavy chipping, tearing and creasing along the extremities ,with some loss. General toning, some soiling and minor staining to the wrappers. Moderate splitting and tearing along the covers' hinges, with the wrappers somewhat tenuously attached. Minor toning and scattered light soiling in the interior. Good .

A single issue of this little magazine from the turn of the century, featuring essays and philosophical/literary musings on culture, society, art and literature, as well as short aphorisms and sayings throughout. Founded by Hubbard after his 'bitter experience with the New England intellectual and literary elite,' the Philistine was at first intended as a 'one-off jibe at the establishment.' (MacLeod: American Little Magazines of the 1890s). Published through the Roycrofters community in New York, the magazine eventually became a vehicle for Hubbard to express his political and cultural views, while incorporating the Arts and Crafts aesthetic popular at the time, into printing and layout. GOOD condition. Small tear in the upper rear cover. Minor soiling. General browning to the wraps. Minor foxing to the wraps. Alphanumerical notation in pencil to the first page. Two small dampstains at the fore edge. Good .
