A single issue of this magazine featuring and illustrated article 'On Negro Schools' that provides a condescending and somewhat stereotyped view of African-Americans and their education through schools. Although condescending, it does have a positive tone, and advocates education, as well as citing its positive effects. Accompanied by stereotyped illustrations of African-Americans by Porte Crayon (David Hunter Struther). Another article 'The Art of Perfumery,' discusses in detail the creation of perfumes, and perfumery in general, including various plants and substances used. With illustrations. GOOD condition. This was perhaps written by Horace Greeley and contains his observations on the settlements and westward migrations of people in the United States. Also present in this issue is an article on glass blowing, etc. The editor's drawer section contains a brief anecdote alluding the terror caused by the Ku Klux Klan in Georgia, as well as the potential crookedness of "Indian Agents." GOOD condition. Minor to moderate spotting and foxing to the covers, with a few small stains. Some soiling. Some creasing. Wrappers chipped, with minor tears, along the extremities, with splitting, tearing, chipping and loss along the spine-especially near the tail. Bound volume of this magazine, containing parts of February and December, and complete issues of the months from March to November. Many stories and poems by Ann Stephens, Mary Dunlap, L.H. Sigourney and others. With a monthly fashion section, accompanied by a color or black and white fashion plate, as well as a section devoted to cooking, with tips/recipes on cooking cakes and other items. The Ladies' National Magazine was started as a women's journal to compete with Godey's, eventually changing its name to Peterson's Ladies' National Magazine. FAIR condition. Minor soiling and fading to the covers. Interior solid, with incomplete months of February and December. A few pages MISSING sections (cut out) repaired with rice paper, with some tearing along the extremities also repaired with rice paper.
