She was an elderish lady, quite stout, with a red face and poppy black eyes which were always bugging round for sinfulness. When she saw the advertisement for Morton Entertainments, her eyes popped out further than usual and her face got redder and redder. By hook or by crook she was going to prevent Mr. Morton and his daughter Tess from giving their show and began scheming to discredit them - and Ali, their elephant - in the eyes of Pittsville. Fortunately, they had friends - Uncle Sam Swyer, his two grandsons, his hired man, Don Harding - and had a scheme of their own , to show Mrs. Dengler where sinfulness really begins and ends. Ali had a big part to play and carried it out wih all the sagacity and good manners proper to an Indian elephant'. C3E. Very Good/Very Good.

The characters, the incidents, the little details, are all as natural as possible. Probably the picture is really composite; so many interesting figures, so many notable incidents, could hardly have been collected into so small a compass of time and space; but the arrangement has been very skilfully done. The second part of the volume, 'In the Cannon's Mouth' is an experience belonging to the first Afghan War'. Sarah TYtler was the pseudonym of Henrietta Keddie (1827-1914) a prolific Scottish author.
