The disturbing educational success rates for Aboriginal students in comparison with their peers have been documented for many years. Reducing this persistent achievement gap is one of Canada's most pressing educational challenges. Numerous reports commissioned by federal and provincial governments and Aboriginal authorities have offered detailed examinations of the complex social, economic, linguistic, and cultural interrelationships that contextualize the educational environments of Aboriginal students. Many of their families struggle with the legacy of residential schools that ripped families apart and caused immeasurable damage to the social fabric. Schools serving these communities work within a context that may include poverty, learned helplessness, despair, and high levels of abuse, addictions and violence. For some communities, student suicide rates may exceed graduation rates. Yet despite many extraordinary challenges, some schools are producing tangible progress for their Aboriginal students. This report springs from a study of ten such schools in an effort to identify practices that appear to contribute to their success.

Benn, Carl
The Iroquois in the War of 1812
Toronto, University Of Toronto Press, Scholarly Publishing Division, 1998. First Edition, First Printing. Softcover. pp. xi, 272. 8vo. Black-and-white photographs, portraits, maps, illustrations, etc. About ten pages show nominal highlighting else, the remainder of the contents remain bright, clean, and unmarked; very good+. Until now, the story of Iroquois participation in the War of 1812 has not received detailed examination, and there have consequently been major gaps in our understanding of the Iroquois, their relations with Euroamerican society, and the course of the war itself. The Iroquois in the War of 1812 proves that, in fact, the Six Nations' involvement was 'too significant to ignore.'.

Bird, Louis; Jennifer S.H. Brown (Ed.); Paul W. DePasquale; Mark F. Ruml; Roland Buhr; Anne Lindsay; Donna G. Sutherland
Telling Our Stories: Omushkego Legends and Histories from Hudson Bay
Peterborough, Ontario, Canada, Broadview Press, 2005. First Edition. Softcover. pp. 269. 8vo. Pictorial covers, photographic frontispiece. No detectable flaws, contents clean and unmarked with tight, sound binding; near fine. Since the 1970s, Louis Bird, a distinguished Aboriginal storyteller and historian, has been recording the stories and memories of Omushkego (Swampy Cree) communities along western Hudson and James Bays. In nine chapters, he presents some of the most vivid legends and historical stories from his collection, casting new light on his people’s history, culture, and values. Working with the editors and other contributors to provide background and context for the stories, he illuminates their many levels of meaning and brings forward the value system and world-view that underlie their teachings. Students of Aboriginal culture, history, and literature will find that this is no ordinary book of stories compiled from a remote, disconnected voice, but rather a project in which the teller, deeply engaged in preserving his people's history, language, and values, is committed to bringing his listeners and readers as far along the road to understanding as he possibly can.
