Sm. folio, First Edition, with series title and title in red and black, and very numerous fine cartoons and caricatures throughout; original red coarse-grained cloth, upper board with multiple frame border enclosing four cardinal rosettes all in blind, the whole containing an elaborate floral wreath with title lettered all in gilt, leather back tooled and lettered in gilt, marbled edges, yellow endpapers, a remarkably, bright, clean copy in splendid period binding. Lovely copy in wholly unrestored contemporary binding of the third and final volume of Leech's well-known trilogy of illustrations from the 'Punch' archives. Scarce in anything like this condition.

Oblong 4to., First Edition thus, with many full-page illustrations (one cartoon partly and neatly coloured by a child); original pictorial boards, cloth back, front board (which is largely white) very lightly age-soiled else a very good, clean copy of a work increasingly hard to find in this condition. Of all David Low's work, this is perhaps the undisputed classic. Some opt instead for Low's War Cartoons (1941) which undoubtedly reflects the spirit of the times; it seems to us, however, that the present work is to be preferred simply because in covering the years 1932-35 it embraces precisely the period which gave Low the opportunity to sharpen his barb in the face of what seemed to him both government and public apathy. The creation of Colonel Blimp alone makes this a true classic of pre-war illustration. Horne, p.296 et seq.
