FIRST APPEARANCE OF SCOTT'S CLASSIC ILLUSTRATED EDITION. The frontispiece portrait of Fritha is modelled on Scott's first wife, novelist Elizabeth Jane Howard: 'I stood for hours, holding a pillow, which he turned into the wounded snow goose' (Howard's memoirs).
