New York: Leavitt & Allen, 1863. 1863. - Sextodecimo, 6-1/2 inches high by 4-7/8 inches wide. Brown cloth titled and decorated in gilt on the spine with the vignette of a sock framed by decorated borders in blind on the covers. There is wear to the head of the spine and a few small stains to the front cover. 130 pages, illustrated with a frontispiece and a full-page plate by James H. Richardson. Very good. From the series "The Sock Stories, by 'Aunt Fanny's' Daughter". A juvenile Civil War fiction novel about a group of boys playing soldiers, calling themselves the "Dashahed Zouaves". The playful frontispiece, titled "Bull Run", depicts a bull chasing the child soldiers. Born in 1842, Sarah Barrow Holly wrote and created books with her mother. Known as Sarah Barrow when she wrote this book, she subsequently married an architect named Holly in 1865. Very good .

Softcover, bound in stapled black & white pictorial self-wraps, illustrated with a portrait of Baum and his books on the front cover. The bottom front corner of the front cover is creased. 32 pages, including the covers, profusely illustrated throughout. There is a small crease to the bottom front corner of several pages. Else, near fine. The first appearance of L. Frank Baum's short story "The Tiger's Eye: A Jungle Fairy Tale". Originally written to be included as one of his series of Animal Fairy Tales which were published in consecutive issues of "The Delineator", Baum wrote "The Tiger's Eye" in 1905 writing in a letter that the story "was intended to be the tenth of the Animal Fairy Tales in a planned book edition". The story was, however, considered too frightening for small children and was not published until it appeared in print in this special L. Frank Baum number of "The American Book Collector". This special number of "The American Book Collector" also includes several essays about Baum and his works. Among them are Russell P. MacFall's "L. Frank Baum - Shadow and Substance", Edward Wagenknecht's "'Utopia Americana' A Generation Afterwards", Martin Gardner's "Why Librarians Dislike Oz", Harry Neal Baum's "How My Father Wrote the Oz Books", and Justin G.
