A portfolio of 6 original etchings by Paul Avril laid loose into cream boards backed with a red cloth spine, titled and decorated in red within a decorative red frame on the front cover. Lacking the silk ties, the covers are soiled and darkened along the edges. The front flap of the integral inner paper chemise is torn at fold. The chemise and the first etching are slightly foxed, though the other plates are in near fine condition. Very good.

Softcover, bound in yellow wraps illustrated with 11 vignettes framing the title on the front cover, including one depicting boys playing baseball (or possibly cricket). The covers are soiled with a few minor stains. The lower edge of the spine is split with a small tear extending into the front cover and a tiny chip along the rear cover. 24 pages, illustrated with a title page vignette, and 6 wood engravings on 3 pages. There is foxing throughout with a stain to the front edge of the title page. Good. "Babcock's Moral, Instructive and Amusing Toy Books" series. The American Antiquarian society has identified the text as "typographically identical to an issue dated 1841". Good .

Bound into three-quarter brown morocco with speckled rose cloth by the publisher G.P. Putnam's Sons, titled in gilt with raised bands on the spine. What appears to be a presentation binding is further enhanced by speckled rose cloth endpapers signed in print "G.P. Putnam's Sons" on the verso of the front endpaper and "The Knickerbocker Press" on the verso of the rear.The cover illustration of Putnam's trade edition of the book is additionally mounted on the front pastedown. All edges are gilt. There are but minor blemishes to the covers. [157] pages as follows: [2], pages [1]-[6] consisting of the foreword with textual illustrations, and 149 unnumbered pages of caricature illustrations with satirical captions about the life of Scottish and British troops fighting in the First World War. There are minor flaws only, else near fine. An especially beautiful copy of the book. A prominent British humorist and cartoonist Captain Charles Bruce Bairnsfather (1887-1959) joined the Royal Warwickshire Regiment as a second lieutenant in 1914. He served with a machine gun unit in France until he was hospitalized following the Second Battle of Ypres. He developed his humorous satirical series of caricature illustrations for the British tabloid, the "Bystander" while posted to the 34th Division headquarters on Salisbury Plain. His caricature frequently featured "Old Bill", a curmudgeonly soldier with his trademark walrus mustache and balaclava. Fine .

The upper half of the text block is detached from the wrappers & the book is cracked at 3 of the plates. There is an owner's ink name on the front endpaper with some light foxing. There are glue marks to the margins & mount of the first plate. Good.

The text is in French. Good .

(New York): Time, [1976]. [1976]. - Quarto [11-5/8 inches high by 8-3/8 inches wide], softcover. Four songs are laid into a gray stiff paper portfolio in French fold printed in blue. The portfolio is very lightly rubbed with the bottom corners slightly creased. There is a publisher's note printed in blue on its inside front cover. Each of the 4 songs consists of a sheet of cream paper folded once to form 4 sides. Each includes a bright color illustration by Paul Davis on the first side, followed by the words and music of the song with a note on the origins of the song on the 4th side. There is some light staining or foxing to the 4th side of each song with a small chip to the front margin of 1 illustration. A red, white & blue ribbon, which is used to hold the songs in place, is stapled to the inside rear cover of the portfolio. Very good. The songs are "Yankee Doodle", "The Liberty Song", "What a Court Hath Old England" and "Ode for American Independence". The publisher notes that the songs were originally published as broadsides and were immensely popular throughout the Colonies during the Revoluionary years and the early days of the Republic. Very good .

The vellum is spotted with stains to the top corner of the front cover. The dust jacket is rubbed, darkened, stained & chipped. The front panel & flap are detached & the lower half of the jacket spine is lacking. Title, [2] leaves & 41 pages, printed on one side only. Illustrated in black & white with a portrait frontispiece & 3 plates by Walton H. Roberts, 1 plate is detached. There is some foxing to the frontispiece & occasional light soiling to the versos of the leaves. Very good in the remnants of the dust wrapper.

Limited edition of 112 numbered copies. The book was dictated by an eight-and-a-half year old child and "written as dictated without suggestion or alteration". Very good .
