Topics in this volume include an account, presumably by a missionary of a travel through China, including to Tiong-Lok, among other places; African life; several pieces on photography; Edgar Allan Poe; woman's question in China; the world of the East, as well as many short pieces on items such as: photograph of Saturn; beer as food; explorations in Brazil; African missions; burial of the last Shawnee chief; missions in India; Texas wealth; Japan, etc. GOOD condition. Pagination runs from 330-384, plus a title page with an illustration of London from the Thames at the head. With a fold-out map of the County of Montgomery, as well as a fold-out view of the city and harbor of Fonchall, capital of Madeira. A single issue of this British magazine, with this issue featuring articles on the then present war between England and France-the Seven Years' War or French and Indian War-including a history and origin of the war, a letter from a French officer providing and account of the Siege of Louisburg, and a journal of a winter campaign in Canada and the siege of Quebec. Also included is an account of a 'Rebellion of the Negroes in Jamaica,' describing Tacky's War or Rebellion in which African enslaved people led by Tacky rebelled against their owners, being ultimately defeated. Topics relating to history and religion, a mathematical question, Dutch designs defeated in the East Indies, ships taken by the French, etc. are also featured. GOOD+ condition. Faint creasing to the outer pages, with some browning along the extremities. Minor wear along the extremities. Remains of binding along the spine. Very minor scattered foxing. Good .

A general interest magazine reprinting articles or excerpts of articles from various magazines and other sources that were published internationally. Many pieces on literature and authors. Of note in this volume is an account of travels in the Mississippi Valley in which the author discusses Native Americans, their language, customs and burial mounds; an article on a war between the Turks and Egypt; a look at the philosophy or pseudo-science behind the phenomenon of apparitions or ghosts; an account from a Mr. Stuart of Scotland's travels in the United States in which he reflects on slavery, offering several anecdotes of the cruelty experienced by enslaved people, especially in the Charleston area, as well as quoting several African-Americans and their experiences; an account of Murat's travels in the United States where he also discusses slavery, arriving at the racially biased conclusion that Blacks are inferior to whites based partially on their lack of successful rebellion against slaveholders. POOR condition. Binding mostly given out, with the text block SEPARATED into many different sections and not bound into the covers. Exterior stained, soiled, scuffed and overall rather heavily worn. Scattered foxing in the interior, with some pages bearing offsetting or very heavily browned. Some stamping on the inside front cover. Some pages with minor tears or creases. Overall a heavily worn and fragile piece, best handled with care. Poor .
