Bowes & Bowes, Cambridge, 1931. First Edition, Paper Covers. Good/N/A. black titles spine & front; published for the Cambridge Antiquarian Society; Though the Index may appear to be rather slight, it is the only key we have to Cambridge matters contained in the many thousand volumes of Manuscripts which Oxford’s Bodleian Library possesses, and its printing will open the door to many hitherto unknown manuscripts for all those who are interested in matters concerning the Town and University of Cambridge. Mr. Madan's work (as presented in Part I) appeared so valuable that J. H. Bullock was tempted to supplement it by adding similar notes upon the MSS. etc. relating to the County, which cannot be satisfactorily separated from the Town or even the University. Ultimately the supplement has proved twice the size of the original and the two parts together make an instrument of research which should be of real value to students of Cambridge and its County. light wear to bottom of spine; includes notes & index Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. 113 pages. 0521280435 Marshall, Sybil, Fenland Chronicle: Recollections of William Henry and Kate Mary Edwards collected and edited by their daughter.
Marshall, Sybil
Fenland Chronicle: Recollections of William Henry and Kate Mary Edwards collected and edited by their daughter.
Cambridge University Press, London, 1980. First Paperback Edition, Softcover, Illustrated by: Ewart Oakeshott. Good Condition. 9780521280433 gilt titles on dark brown panel spine; illustrated by b/w. drawings throughout; "in this book Sybil Marshall transcribes the recollections of her parents in their own dialect. William Henry Edwards, her father, died in 1940, at the age of eighty. Mrs Edwards is still alive. Between them the Edwardses look back on a hundred years of life in the Fens. They speak in their own direct and vigorous way, richly figurative and often sardonically humorous, of the people and times they have known. The Fens are still markedly different from other parts of England, less accessible, less spoilt, and a little daunting to the outsider. The character of the land has produced its own way of life. Mr Edwards was by turns turf-cutter, boat-owner along the waterways, windmill proprietor, drainage superintendent and small farmer. So he and his wife saw each truly Fenland occupation from the inside: he as the worker, she as the housewife. They lived through a period when life was in many ways very harsh and circumscribed. Yet the life and the place produced a people of tough individuality, with an outlook and a speech of their own. The resulting book is as individual as the people. It is amusing and touching and continuously absorbing. Mrs Marshall opens a line to the past, and her book will go on the shelf beside Sturt and those other writers who chronicled the English people of their own region as they knew them." Mays, Spike, Reuben's Corner
Mays, Spike
Reuben's Corner
Eyre & Spottiswoode, London, 1969. Publishers Proof Copy, Softcover. Fair Condition. Foreword by Richard Church; ReubenÂ’s Corner has become a minor classic since it was first published in 1969. The author's realistic account of his childhood in an isolated hamlet recalls a rural way of life which has all but disappeared. In Bartlow Hamlet the road bends round by the cottage of Reuben Ford, Spike Mays's grandfather. This is Reuben's Corner, on the Camps road a mile from Ashdon, deep in the Essex countryside; and it was here that the author, christened Cedric, spent most of his childhood. Life was hard: there was never enough to eat, and children went to school in garments cut down from their parents' clothing. But young Ced also remembers the warmth and character of village life, whether he was singing in the church choir, working for the Squire cleaning silver, spying on courting couples in the fields, or poaching pheasants in the woods. First Thus. Size: Octavo (standard book size). 223 pages. no Dust Jacket as published.. Previous owner's inscription, lavish, in ink to title page. From the Heart : Voices of the American Indian
Pimlico, London, 1997. First Edition, Paperback. Near Fine/N/A. 9780712673570 white & black titles spine; front cover photo. by Edward Curtis; illustrated by b/w. drawings & photo's.; "Some of you think an Indian is like a wild animal. This is a great mistake. I will tell you all about our people, and then you can judge whether an Indian is a man or not ... What I have to say will come from my heart, and I will speak with a straight tongue." - (Chief Joseph, Nez Perce); Lee Miller was the writer and head of research for the television series based on 500 Nations - the acclaimed history of North American Indians. In 'From the Heart' she retrieves the voices of Indian people over five centuries and weaves them into an alternative history of the continent. By doing so she introduces us to the grandeur and diversity of the nations who held the land before the first Europeans set foot in it. Here is the testimony of more than 250 Indian civilizations - of the Aztec king Moctezuma, the Seminole leader Sceola, Tecumseh, Cochise, Sitting Bull, Geronimo and Sarah Winnemucca - and of the white men who fought, betrayed and, on rare occasions, defended them. Extraordinarily moving ... a haunting and eloquent anthology that serves as a testament to the courage and the nobility of Native Americans in the face of physical and spiritual genocide.; 404 pages. Miller, Edward, Portrait of a College: A History of the College of Saint John the Evangelist in Cambridge (SIGNED COPY)
Miller, Edward
Portrait of a College: A History of the College of Saint John the Evangelist in Cambridge (SIGNED COPY)
Cambridge Univ. Press, Cambridge, 1961. First Edition, Hardcover (Original Cloth). As New/As New. Signed by Author. The College of St John the Evangelist in Cambridge was founded four and a half centuries ago. From its small beginnings as a centre for theological training, with a cluster of buildings round a single Court and a handful of Fellows and Scholars, it soon grew into, and has remained, one of the largest of the Cambridge houses. This book is the story of its growth, of the changes in its nature and of the essential continuity that underlies them. The character study which emerges is affectionate without being pious: the warts are not painted out. It is a living and a rounded portrait, presenting the varied day-to-day activities of a community as well as the more formal aspects of a place of education - the Parnassus plays, the archery or football along with the reforms in the statutes, the widening curriculum and the growth of the tutorial system. But Mr Miller (Fellow of St John's College and Lecturer in History in the University of Cambridge) offers more than an account of a specific place of education or a particular community. He shows its wider connections with the development of the University and the growth of Western learning; and he gives the context of those economic, political and social changes in England as a whole which are so clearly reflected in the fortunes of a single college. Here in fact, is history in its fullest sense: a vigorous and entertaining narrative, wide in range, but never losing sight of the significant detail. The illustration on the front cover shows an Ackermann print of Third Court, the Wren bridge and the Backs. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. 150 pages. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. this book has 2 D/J's - the inner red one has light edge-wear & the outer blue one is as new. Both are in archive acetate film protection. Miller, John
Southwold in Old Photographs (Britain in Old Photographs)
Sutton Publishing Ltd. Stroud, Gloucestershire, 1999. First Edition, Softcover. Near Fine Condition. 9780750922456 It is said, and not without some justification, that a picture is worth a thousand words. As it happens Southwold, very nearly England's most easterly town, is endlessly written about. Its charm, grace and pure magic have captivated writers and journalists ever since Daniel Defoe visited in 1713. But this book tells the story of Southwold over the last 100 years in pictures. The photographers seized opportunities presented by the late Victorian and early Edwardian era - which also proved to be the golden age of the postcard - to capture Southwold on their glass plate negatives, and also on film. It is all here: the beach, the common, the sea, the town, the people, the wars and the special Southwold occasions. And of course there are some lovely pictures of the eccentric little railway that helped turn a town that lived mainly by fishing into a genteel holiday resort. This book will delight all those who love Southwold and understand its funny ways, and who know a good picture when they see one. Publisher's list of series titles to rear. Moss, Brian
The Broads (New Naturalist 89)
HarperCollins (Harper Collins), London, 2001. First Edition, Hardcover. Fine Condition/Fine. 9780002201636 Broadland is set mostly in Norfolk and partly in Suffolk. The peat deposits in Broadland were dug in many places mainly during the 9th to 13th centuries. The pits eventually filled with water, giving us the Broads, 190 km of navigable water unimpeded by dams or locks. Before World War II, Broadland was the epitome of richness of water plants and their associated animals, and was of international importance as a diverse wetland. Sadly, much of the richness has now gone, and the significance of Broadland lies more now in its significance in environmental restoration. The problems faced by the Broads are being experienced world-wide, and devising ways in which the Broads may be managed to restore the previous richness has produced a strategy of value throughout the world. This book discusses the history of the Broads, the waters in the past and the waters now, the people who come into contact with and influence these waterways, and what the future holds for this small but important area. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. 392 pages. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. in archive acetate film protection. Dust Jacket un-clipped. Gilt titles spine. green cloth. Lakes, Loughs and Lochs (New Naturalist 128)
William Collins, London, 2015. First Edition, Hardcover. As New/As New. 9780007511389 Another volume in the popular New Naturalist series, this book gives a comprehensive account of the natural history of Britain and Ireland's inland waters, many of which are popular holiday destinations. Freshwaters form the fascinating threads that stitch together the landscapes of our planet with a myriad of exchanges involving an array of organisms, from algae and insects to hippopotami and otters. Healthy lakes and their shores influence our quality of life and they strengthen the economy. They are important ecosystems that can sustain a healthy balance of aquatic life, provide us with much enjoyment, and help support our socio-economic needs. At the same time they suffer the consequences of human abuses of the land – increasing urbanisation, intensive farming, drainage and an increasing invasion of non-native species, to name but a few. Moss explores the richness of their fundamental ecology, emphasizing the need to view these freshwater systems as a whole, and not to manage or assess them in isolation, as well as the importance of ongoing conservation efforts. Brian Moss is is one of the most influential freshwater ecologists in Europe and one of the world’s leading scientists on shallow-lake ecology. He is Professor of Botany at the University of Liverpool and has researched freshwater biology across Europe, Africa and the USA. He spent 17 years at the University of East Anglia, where he modernised understanding of the ecological problems of the Norfolk Broads. He is currently focused on the restoration of polluted lakes. 0007160674 Mullard, Jonathan, Gower (New Naturalist 99)
Mullard, Jonathan
Gower (New Naturalist 99)
HarperCollins (Harper Collins), London, 2006. First Reprint, Hardcover. Near Fine Condition/Near Fine. 9780007160679 This is a definitive natural history of the Gower Peninsula, coinciding with its 50th anniversary as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, from its heritage coast and its appeal to the naturalist, to the geology, geomorphology, conservation and ecological history of this diverse area. Located to the south west of Swansea and often described as Wales in miniature, Gower Peninsula was designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) in May, 1946. The area is unique in terms of the variety of the habitats and species that occur within its 188 square kilometres. As a result, it has a greater diversity of conservation designations than almost anywhere else in the UK. The natural history of Gower is like most parts of the British Isles - inextricably linked to the activities of man across many thousand years. "New Naturalist Gower Peninsula" uses the evolving landscape and the effect that the associated changes have had on species and habitats as its core. It provides a detailed examination of: the integration of the archaeological and historic landscape with the natural landscape and its associated species; the geological creation of the peninsula; man's influence on the natural environment over the centuries; the coast and channel, including the limestone cliffs, beaches, caves and saltwater marsh; the environmental impact of the Sea Empress oil disaster in 1996, which discharged 72,000 tonnes of oil into the sea off Gower; and the ongoing conservation of the area and the contribution that naturalists can make. Mullard also looks at notable plants species and the over-wintering bird populations on the estuary, which are of international importance. The culmination of years of research and rich with the latest information and full colour illustrations, "New Naturalist Gower Peninsula" is a valuable source of information on this diverse and fascinating area. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. xviii + 445. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. in archive acetate film protection. Dust Jacket un-clipped. Cambridge Newspapers and Opinion 1780-1850
Oleander Press, Cambridge, 1977. First Edition, Hardcover (Printed Boards). As New/No Dust Jacket. 9780900891151 Description of subject matter printed on insides of covers; The part played by the Cambridge press in rallying and reflecting local public opinion on local and national issues is discussed by Michael Murphy clearly and judiciously, and at the right level of selected detail. Cambridge was not only an important country town but also one of the two university centres, and its reactions therefore possess an especial significance in terms of national opinion. Moreover, the career of Benjamin Flower, editor of the Cambridge Intelligencer, was of national importance. Flower, who has been half-forgotten since his own day, now emerges as an important early Radical and as one of the great pioneers of English journalism, who spoke to a national readership from a local base. In Michael Murphy's words, at the height of the French Revolution in 1793 Flower 'set out to instruct public opinion by reporting parliamentary proceedings and political meetings, and, much more important, by criticising party and authority through powerfully-worded editorial articles. The Intelligencer was the first provincial newspaper in England to develop these new techniques and continue them for an appreciable length of time.' Size: Octavo (standard book size). 144 pages.
