Prince Felix Yusupov: The Man Who Murdered Rasputin
Harrap, London, 1989. First Edition, Hardcover (Original Cloth). Very Good Condition/Very Good. 9780245545337 grey end-papers; titles, contents list, author's preface & list of characters to front. In pre-revolutionary Russia, Grigori Rasputin’s influence over Tsar Nicholas II and Tsarina Alexandra meant he was effectively ruling the country. In a time of great unrest in Russia, his controversial involvement with the imperial family made him a target for many – including the notorious Prince Yusupov and his associates, who would eventually murder the ‘Mad Monk’ with poisoned cream cakes and a bullet to the head. One of the richest men in Russia, Prince Yusupov was married to the Tsar’s niece, Irina, thought by many to be a sham marriage designed to hide his homosexuality. From his flamboyant lifestyle and friendships to his commitment to a cause so great he’d kill for it, his life story makes for a fascinating read. Based on personal interviews and meticulous research, this enthralling biography captures the flavour of the bizarre, eventful and extraordinary life of the man who assassinated Rasputin and unintentionally helped to precipitate the Russian Revolution. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. xiii + 208. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. Slight foxing to page edges. some age-browning to dust jacket. Dust Jacket un-clipped. Dodsworth, Anthony
Around Rawmarsh & Parkgate ( Images of England)
Tempus Publishing Ltd. Stroud, Gloucestershire, 2002. First Edition, Softcover. Good Condition. 9780752424958 Rawmarsh and Parkgate have very different histories and, despite growing together over the past century, remain neighbouring settlements with quite separate . identities. The development of both communities over the past 110 years is reflected in this superb collection of more than 200 photographs. The majority of these images have- come from local personal collections and family albums and many have never been published before. As a whole the photographs combine to show the growth of the two communities linked by Rawmarsh Hill. The key role of industry in their development is particularly clear. Iron and steelworks played a vital role in economic growth, attracting- workers and the services to support a growing population. Leisure time was enjoyed to the full, with street parties, parades and sporting activity. Memorable events are recalled, some tragic, some cause for celebration. Above all else this collection provides a great sense of the changes that have taken place, in shops and businesses, heavy industry, residential areas and, of course, the people - but also reminds us of many continuities. Clearly felt throughout the book is the pride that local inhabitants have taken and continue to take in Rawmarsh and Parkgate. Size: Large Octavo. 128 pages. no Dust Jacket as published.. Manninagh - A Review of Manx Culture No. 1 May 1972
Magazine/Periodical Island Development Co. Ltd. Douglas, Isle of Man, 1972. First Edition, Softcover, Illustrated by: Eric Austwick. Very Good Condition. Douglas, Mona, We Call it Ellan Vannin
Douglas, Mona
We Call it Ellan Vannin
Times Press Ltd./Longbooks, Douglas, Isle of Man, 1970. First Edition, Softcover. Fair Condition. This Island, known officially to the English as the Isle of Man, has had many differing designations in the course of its long history and the one in official and general use today is surely the most ridiculous of the lot, taken at its apparent meaning in the English language - especially as women predominate over men in its population. There has recently been some controversy over it, and a claim that by adding a second "n" to Man the difficulty might be solved, but public opinion seemed to be that this minor change would involve a lot of trouble which was hardly worth while, so the spelling was left optional. Manx people themselves have a simpler way out of the difficulty; they call it in Manx Gaelic, Ellan Vannin. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. 99 pages. Titles, contents & illustrations list to front. The history of Colchester between 1835 and 1992 forms the chapter on Modem Colchester in The Victoria History of the Counties of England: Essex, Volume IX, The Borough of Colchester (1994). The volume on the Borough of Colchester falls into two parts: I - a chronological history incorporating the major themes, such as economic history, local government, and topographical development; II - detailed sections on subsidiary topics including communications, the port, the barracks, the fishery, markets and fairs, public services, churches, and education. The main section here-reproduced forms the chapter on Modem Colchester in Part I and gives a general account of the development of the borough from 1835 until 1992; the appendix reproduces the list of mayors from 1835 until Local Government reorganization in 1974. The chapter here reproduced deals with the ancient town centre and with developments in Berechurch, Greenstead, Lexden, and Mile End, and takes no account of the large area brought into the borough in 1974. Eaton, Clement, The Waning of the Old South Civilization
Eaton, Clement
The Waning of the Old South Civilization
Pegasus, New York, 1969. First Paperback Edition, Paperback. Near Fine/N/A. black titles spine; "the Civil War had an incalculably. traumatic effect on the. South and the Southern spirit, but it did not bring about the creation of a new South within a few short years. To the contrary, much of the Old South civilization survived the war and reconstruction and lived on into the twentieth century. Professor Eaton's brilliant and sensitive study begins with the formation of the Southern Confederacy and ends with the 1880's when men such as Henry Grady and Atticus Haygood were hailing the rise of the New South, The author explores the currents of social and cultural life that flowed on despite the disaster of a civil conflict - and de-emphasizes the military and political history that has been treated in depth elsewhere. However, he makes it clear that in the 1880's the Old South was by no means dead: it waned slowly and could not truly be called gone until the Depression years of the 1930's. The author's primary concern is with telling how slowly the deeply-rooted ways and ideas of the past die. To this subject, Professor Eaten brings fascinating insights and a high caliber of excellent scholarship."; mark from price-label removal front cover; previous owner's name on front endpaper; including note on sources & index - 195 pages. Feltham, John & Edward Wright (edited & with introduction by William Harrison)
Memorials of "God's Acre," being Monumental Inscriptions in the Isle of Man, Taken in the Summer of 1797
The Manx Society, Douglas, Isle of Man, 1868. First Edition, Hardcover (Original Cloth). Very Good Condition/No Dust Jacket. publication number XIV of The Manx Society for Publication of National Documents & one of only 300 copies printed; pre-title page of Manx Society giving date established (1858), logo, volume number, & date of publication, followed by list of officers of the society. tissue-guarded b/w. frontis. illustration showing kirks & five further similar plates throughout the book. The importance of monuments and inscriptions in the illustration of local history cannot be too strongly maintained ; but for these, how many persons and events worthy of remembrance would have remained unknown. There are few monuments in the Isle of Man with any pretension to artistic taste. The inscriptions recorded by Mr. Feltham are in many instances only a bare memorial of name, date, and age, yet these alone will be found useful to the future historian in recording the genealogy of families, as well as a record of the patronymics of the country. Mr. Feltham, during his stay in the Island, resided in Ramsey, and commenced his work in the parish of Maughold proceeding on his way southward ; it has been thought desirable to commence in the regular order in which the various parishes stand on the records. The inscriptions appear to be taken in the order as they lie in the graveyard, by which the names of the various families are in many instances brought in close proximity. The usual custom of adding the wife's surname tends materially to connect links by which many Manx families are united. Supplement to latter part of the book. 15 - page appendix relating to the Manx society. Binder's small label inside rear cover. Size: Octavo (standard book size). 132 + 15 pages. Fleming, Peter
The Siege at Peking
Rupert Hart-Davis, London, 1959. Second Impression, Hardcover (Original Cloth). Good Condition/Fair. b/w. frontis. photo. of Sir Claude Macdonald. On June 20, 1900 the foreign legations at Peking were attacked by Boxers and Imperial Chinese troops, with the equivocal support of the Empress Dowager, Tz'u Hsi. The ensuing siege was to last for 55 days, and the news of it shook the world. China at the end of the nineteenth century was a country in crisis. The Manchu dynasty was in its death throes, held together by the will of the Dowager Empress. Foreign powers were dismantling her Empire and treating her age-old civilisation with contempt. The siege was the cry of a humiliated, ancient culture. The armed forces of eight European powers took part in its relief and the results were disastrous for China. Aside from an indemnity of sixty million pounds, the Western powers quickened the pace of change. The Siege directly led to the overthrow of the Manchu dynasty in 1911. It was the last great co-operative endeavour of the European powers before the First World War. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. 273 pages. some pencil underlining & margin marks. Growing Up In Cambridge: From Austerity to Prosperity
The History Press, Stroud, Gloucestershire, 2009. First Edition, Softcover. Near Fine Condition. 9780752450049 This fascinating story of life in Cambridge is written from the idiosyncratic perspective of an author who not only grew up in the city during the 1950’s and 1960’s but who also attended its prestigious university. Alec Forshaw has remained connected to Cambridge ever since. Brought up on the north side of town, his reminiscences detail not only domestic life with his parents and his brother, but al so the development of Cambridge in post-war Britain. Compelling memories of the city and university, his voyage through the Cambridgeshire education system, the 'Big Freeze' of 1963, family holidays and excursion s into nearby Fenland are just a few examples of how the author vividly depicts the world in which he grew up. Enhanced by a selection of rare photographs Alec Forshaw’s recollection of childhood, student days and family life during this period of great change provide a charming tale that will delight anyone with an interest in the local area or this period in history.
