Brandon, Peter & Short, Brian
South East from 1000 A. D.
Longman, Harlow, Essex, 1990. First Paperback Edition, Paperback, Illustrated by: Photo's & Drawings. Near Fine/N/A. 9780582492455 black titles spine; N.B. - this book is for sale only with it's companion volume -"South-East to AD 1000" (the books are priced individually); one of the 'A Regional History of England' series; front cover illust. shows oasthouses at Sissinghurst, Kent; illustrated throughout with maps, diagrams and half-tones; "In this volume, Peter Brandon and Brian Short examine the history of the people who have lived in the South East of England - in practice the modem counties of Surrey, Kent, East and West Sussex and Greater London south of the Thames - from late Anglo-Saxon times to the present. Although London itself is not given separate treatment in this series, its growing influence on settlement, transport, economy and society in even the most distant comets of the South East is, inevitably, one of the major features of the book. The authors have two principal concerns: to describe the development of the community across this thousand-year span; and to examine the changes to the physical setting in which it takes place. Landscape and society are thus given equal emphasis throughout. The authors pay due attention to the great historical events that have had an impact on the region - wars, plagues, technological change and socio-cultural trends amongst them - but they are also at pains to stress the underlying continuity of rural and urban life. As well as .exploring the interaction of economic, social and landscape history, Peter Brandon and Brian Short also acknowledge the cultural dimension of the ordinary lives they are describing: they show how people themselves became increasingly aware of their environment, and how the landscape has in its turn influenced the art and literature of those who live within it. But the picture is not one of unclouded progress. The authors identify the South East today as one of the problem regions of the developed world, with dense settlement, severe competition for land, and the accelerating erosion of what countryside remains. One of the strongest features of this admirable book is the attention it gives to explaining such contemporary problems through an understanding of their historical origins. The authors move with equal confidence from remote hamlets in the Sussex Downs to the crowded tenements of Lambeth, from prosperous market towns like Ashford, Guildford and Tonbridge to the avenues, crescents and closes of South London's suburbia. All have made their distinctive contribution to the South East as it is today, and all find their appropriate place in this splendidly readable survey."; including index & bibliography - 444 pages. Breitmeyer, Hugo ( Introduction by )
Two Accounts of the Life and Adventures of Bampfylde Moore Carew, the King of the Beggars
Kennard Press, London, 1985. First Thus, Card Covers. Near Fine/N/A. illustrated by b/w. prints, maps & drawings; an extensive introduction gives the background to the family & locality of this notorious eighteenth century rogue; "Bampfylde Moore Carew 'was a Rogue in the grand tradition. An idler, a swindler, a knave and a rascal... a wit and a practical joker'. So Dr Breitmeyer describes this West Country folk hero in his introduction to the two 19th century pamphlets re-printed here for the first time as facsimilies of the originals, which recount Bampfylde's Life and adventures. Born 1690, the second son of an ancient, wealthy and much respected Devonshire family, Bampfylde renounced the comfortable life that might have been his almost by right as a gentleman for that of an itinerant beggar. Choosing the freedom of the road in place of security, adventure not domesticity, and looking always for new experiences, Bampfylde established himself as a true 'King of the Beggars' Although no Scholar-Gipsy but a rogue by any standard of morality, he must have often laughed heartily and he made many others laugh very pleasantly with him."; as-new copy; 60 pages. 0007412479 Cabot, David & Ian Nisbet, Terns (New Naturalist 123)
Cabot, David & Ian Nisbet
Terns (New Naturalist 123)
Collins, London, 2013. First Edition, Hardcover. Fine Condition/Fine. 9780007412471 This New Naturalist volume provides a much-anticipated overview of these fascinating birds - the first book on the natural history of British and Irish terns since 1934. Terns are small seabirds that are commonly seen along coastlines and estuaries in the summer months - their graceful flight and command of the air are among their most attractive features. Most of the five species of terns breeding in Britain and Ireland today are under intensive management, involving protection from predators, human interference, egg-collecting, recreational activities, land-use changes, and a range of issues concerning climate change, including rising sea levels and flooding of low-lying colonies. If these protective measures were abandoned then the numbers of terns would inevitably decline, with the possibility of several species ending up on the endangered list. Covering the history of terns in Britain and Ireland, David Cabot and Ian Nisbet explore these diverse issues as well as offering a comprehensive natural history of these stunning seabirds. Drawing on a wealth of new information and research, the authors focus on migrations, food and feeding ecology as well as breeding biology and behaviour. Perhaps most importantly, they highlight recent conservation issues and prospects, and what this means for the future of terns. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. viv + 461. And yet, when once you have yielded to that charm, what a sway it holds over you! I have toured all over England, and fallen in love with a thousand places, but I love East Anglia most of all. Perhaps it is because it is still so oldfashioned, so out of the world, and yet within such easy reach of it. Two hours after you leave Liverpool Street you can be on a farm where they plough with bullocks, or on a common where you meet shepherds with long smocks and hooks, looking for all the world like overgrown and antiquated Little Boy Blues; or I could deposit you in an out-of-theway corner on the sea-coast where there are fishermen who still use wooden fish-hooks, and this at the end of the nineteenth century, when in London we are hearing of flying machines and submarine boats, where we have mutoscopes and motor cars at our doors, and where the Rontgen rays are ready to reveal our innermost selves to the outside world." Chance, Toby & Peter Williams:
Lighthouses : the Race to Illuminate the World
New Holland Publishers [UK] Ltd. London, 2008. First Edition, Hardcover (Original Cloth). Near Fine Condition/Near Fine. 9781847731746 Lighthouses have always fascinated people for the often incredible feats of engineering and building skill involved in their construction, the romance of their association with shipwrecks, disaster and tales of heroism, the loneliness and dedication of the lighthouse keepers, and the beauty of their locations. But writers and historians have hitherto neglected the story of the very reason for their existence - the bright light that guides mariners and travellers alike to safety. In this book, Toby Chance and Peter Williams explain how, in the enthusiasm and ambition of the Victorian age, great steps forward were made by men with the vision, technical skill and scientific ability to take on the English lighthouse authorities and drag lighthouse illumination out of the dark ages. Theirs is a story of self-confidence and prejudice, competition and collaboration, trial and error. It is peopled by rivals, friends, mavericks and innovators, as well as authorities that were resistant to change and reluctant to adopt new technologies. In a time when globalization became a reality for local firms across the world and empires opened up new corners of the globe to Western consciousness, lighthouses were an indispensable tool, ensuring the safe transport of goods and people. James Chance, together with his family firm Chance Brothers, was at the centre of that expanding world. Size: Octavo (standard book size). 272 pages. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. in archive acetate film protection. Dust Jacket un-clipped. Gilt titles spine. red cloth; illustrated by b/w. drawings with colour & b/w. photo's..
