Sykes, Lieut. Col. P. M. [Sir Percy Molesworth], A History of Persia (2 volumes)
Sykes, Lieut. Col. P. M. [Sir Percy Molesworth]
A History of Persia (2 volumes)
Macmillan and Co. Limited, London, 1915. First Edition, Hardcover (Quarter Leather). Good Condition. rebound in pebbled blue cloth covers with leather spines each with four raised bands & faded gilt leather title labels affixed & the author's name & volume numbers blind-stamped lower on the spines. The original front covers with their bright gilt decorative centerpieces (of Cyrus the great on the first volume and of Shah Abbas on the second volume) have been glued to the new front covers. Percy Molesworth Sykes (1867–1945) was a British soldier, diplomat, and author who wrote several important books about Persia (present-day Iran) and neighboring countries, including Ten Thousand Miles in Persia (1902), The Glory of the Shia World (1910), and this, his two-volume A History of Persia (1915). Sykes was educated at the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst and, upon his commission as an officer in the British Army, joined a cavalry regiment in India in 1888. In November 1892, he undertook a secret mission to Samarkand (present-day Uzbekistan) to survey, on behalf of the British authorities, the Trans-Caspian Railway, recently completed by the Russians. He made trips to Persia in 1893 and 1894 for surveying and mapping, and to cultivate local leaders. In late 1894, he was appointed the first British consul for Kerman and Baluchistan, a position he held for the next a decade. After an introduction to the climate and physical features of the country, A History of Persia provides a comprehensive history, from the early civilization of Elam (circa 2700 BC) to the adoption of the first modern constitution in 1906. The work has been described as: "the definitive history of Persia, a work of remarkable perception, readability and scholarship, which has not been surpassed." Tack, Dora Kathleen
Maze of Memories: Hilton-Huntingdonshire 1948-1958
APT Publishing, St. Ives, Cambridgeshire, 1998. First Edition, Softcover. Near Fine Condition. 9780953435906 Dora Tack spent her childhood in Brixton, London but moved to Huntingdonshire during the wartime bombing, falling in love with, and marrying, farm worker Frank Tack. Tales and photographs gleaned from many friends and acquaintances, alongside experiences in the course of her daily life, formed a source of inspiration and factual store when Dora, a discerning observer and avid story-teller, decided to record her life for her grandchildren. ‘A Maze of Memories’, her third book, is a maze of memories pulled from 1948-1958, the time when Dora and her family lived in and around Hilton. It gives an insight into a village life that rarely exists today. Fascinating, puzzling, yet logical and ordered, just like Hilton Maze itself. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. x + 129. Tibbs, Rodney
Fenland River: The Story of the Great Ouse and Its Tributaries
Terence Dalton Ltd. Lavenham, Suffolk, 1969. First Edition, Hardcover (Original Cloth). Very Good Condition/Very Good. 9780900963100 Map end-papers in green & white. The Great Ouse river rises in Northamptonshire, skirts a mile or so of the Oxfordshire border before beginning its journey through Buckinghamshire, Bedfordshire, Huntingdonshire, Cambridgeshire, the Isle of Ely and Norfolk to the Wash. It flows through towns such as Buckingham, Bedford, Huntingdon, Ely and Kings Lynn. Its tributaries, with such delightful names as the Wissey, the Kym and the Lark, add the counties of East and West Suffolk, Essex and Hertfordshire. They also connect towns such as Leighton Buzzard, Cambridge, Bury St. Edmunds and Thetford with the main river. Whilst the river as a whole covers such a wide area it is as a Fenland river with extensive drainage and water conservation systems that the Great Ouse is usually considered. Rodney Tibbs has written "Fenland River" not so much as a guide book, in which role it is however exceptionally good, but as a book covering many aspects including angling, boating, wild life, drainage, conservancy, history and topography. The large number of photographs are of a high standard and capture the atmosphere of the river and the towns and countryside through which it flows. The many maps, old and new, help trace the changes over the years. Size: Large Octavo. 128 pages. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. in archive acetate film protection. Price clipped inside book. Gilt titles spine. a very slight ripple to the binding at the front top outer corner - hardly noticeable. blue cloth; illustrated by b/w. photo's. & maps. Toms, Mike
Owls: A Natural History of the British and Irish Species (New Naturalist 125)
Collins, London, 2014. First Edition, Hardcover. Fine Condition/Fine. 9781405049245 Owls have always featured prominently in the mythology and folklore of a variety of cultures. These mysterious nocturnal creatures are thought to be symbols of wisdom, omens of death, and bringers of prophecy. In fact, owls are one of the oldest species of vertebrate animal, with fossils dating back 60 million years. Owls have been a source of inspiration to writers, artists, historians and naturalists alike. In a much-anticipated volume on one of Britain’s most fascinating group of birds, Mike Toms draws on a wealth of experience and research, providing a comprehensive natural history of British owls. The first part of the book covers various aspects of owl taxonomy, origins, anatomy, behaviour and ecology and looks across the British owl species, drawing comparisons and highlighting differences. The second part takes each species in turn to provide a more detailed perspective, fleshing out relevant conservation issues, behaviour and status. Toms explores Britain’s beloved Barn Owl, Tawny Owl and Snowy Owl amongst several others. He uses the vast database and latest research from his work with the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) to focus particularly on the specifics of owls’ breeding ecology, their dispersal patterns, diet, vocalisations, description, population changes and mortality. He addresses conservation issues, changes in legislation and potential changes in the status of one of Britain’s most iconic birds, providing a fascinating overview of the biology and history of British owls.
