Badger (New Naturalist 114)
Collins, London, 2010. First Edition, Hardcover. Heraldry in Westminster Abbey
The Heraldry Society, London, 1961. Revised Edition, Softcover (Saddle-stapled) Green Card Covers. Very Good Condition. To those who can read what has been called" the shorthand of history," there is much of interest in the armorial shields and badges which cluster on the walls and monuments of Westminster Abbey, and jewel its windows with their bright heraldic colours. The blazonry in the Abbey forms a record of seven hundred years, from the time-worn shields of King Henry III and those who joined him in rebuilding Edward the Confessor's church, to modern insignia such as the Royal Air Force badges in the Battle of Britain window telling of those who in our time fought to preserve all the ancient Abbey stands for. In these pages some of the armorial devices with which the Abbey abounds are described and explained for those who care to see how blazonry throws its colourful light on history and tradition. The reader need have no prior knowledge of heraldry, but if he follows these notes to the end he will find that they have given him a brief introduction to the subject. As instances of the language of heraldry, some blazons (i.e. verbal descriptions of arms) are given in the traditional terms accompanied by an explanation; while for students of armory the blazons of arms referred to in the text are included in an appendix. Reprint. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. 46 pages. No Dust Jacket as published. ink-written date on title page. Black titles front. illustrated by b/w. drawings. 0859020258 Smith, Robin, Australia's Eucalypts
Smith, Robin
Australia's Eucalypts
Currey O'Neil, Melbourne, Australia, 1980. First Edition, Hardcover (Original Cloth). Near Fine Condition/Near Fine. 9780859020251 Photographs by Robin Smith & text by Bruce Edwards; brown end-papers. The eucalypts possess a unique beauty. It is a beauty which, more than any other feature, gives the Australian landscape its distinctive character. The early settlers, familiar with the well-ordered foliage of English trees, at first found the native gums strange and mis-shapen. Curiosity, however, soon developed into affection. Today the eucalypts are the most popular of Australia's native trees. Much of their appeal comes from their great variety of shape, size and foliage. Both the painter and the poet have looked at the eucalypts and found qualities they admired: majesty, grace, strength, resilience. Robin Smith began photographing the eucalypts twenty years ago. Since that time he has become acknowledged as Australia's leading scenic photographer. This book has been a long-cherished ambition and a labour of love. The trees included in this collection present a wide selection of the eucalypts. Here are the karri, mountain ash and blue gum of the forests, the mallees and coolibah of the inland, the ironbarks and river red gums, the sculptured forms of the snow gums. The text by natural history writer Bruce Edwards provides an informative introduction to the eucalypts and explains their importance in the ecology of the continent. Size: Small Folio (over 12" -19" tall). 80 pages. Dust Jacket un-clipped. Black titles spine. grey cloth; illustrated by colour photo's.. Includes index. Quantity Available: 1. Smith, Stuart, The Yellow Wagtail (New Naturalist Monographs No. 4)
Smith, Stuart
The Yellow Wagtail (New Naturalist Monographs No. 4)
Collins, London, 1950. First Edition, Hardcover (Original Cloth). Good Condition/Good. In this book, the first New Naturalist Monograph on a species of bird, Dr. Stuart Smith, author of How to Study Birds, has concentrated the result of years of observation and research on the Yellow Wagtail. Dr. Smith writes from his own experience of practical field-studies, his continual hobby and spare-time occupation. Most field-workers have their "own" bird, or birds, and Stuart Smith's favourite is Motacilla flava flavissima, the Yellow Wagtail of the British Isles, a subspecies, practically confined to these islands, of a species which is widely distributed in the Old World. The British Yellow Wagtail in particular, and the Yellow Wagtail species in general, have been deserving of study and monography for many years. Dr. Smith's middle chapters, on territory, display and reproduction, are based on many hours of careful observation in the field, and much careful deduction therefrom. His other chapters give us a statement of the complex systematics and distribution of the species - a statement which was badly needed - for the flava wagtails are in an unstable state from the evolutionary point of view. There is no doubt that this monograph, with its very beautiful and accurate paintings by Edward Bradbury, will be not only invaluable to biologists in their study of the future evolution of the species, but will appeal to ornithologists and amateurs alike by the lively and pleasant quality of the writing, the interesting and extremely informative presentation of the subject, and the learned bibliography. Illustrated with 8 colour and 4 black-and-white plates. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. xiv + 178. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. Yesterday's Stortford : an album of memories and curiosities
Barracuda Books Limited, Buckingham, 1981. First Edition, Hardcover (Original Cloth). Near Fine Condition/Good. 9780860231554 b/w. map end-papers; Diarists and drinkers, rebels and revellers, painters and princes - all have known Stortford, and have left their impressions. These open the pages of this fascinating album of the past. Here sober men also preached temperance: men like Joseph 'Jesus' Crisp, who opposed ale for paupers; Avery Rolf, who proposed drink on prescription, and Alfred Slaps Barrett, whose son Ted played trombone abed. Fishmonger Billy Peck went shopping barefoot and bowler hatted, and Brother Xavier braved an inferno for the sake of a smoke. Sarah Death wore white stockings and her friend's dog wore black. Kathleen Hill rode to hounds - and to fires on a motorbike: she saved a suffering horse by driving its owner instead. Thunderstorms threatened builder-dowser Bacon, so he was tied to his own scaffolding, while Gerald Scott got 3s and four ginger beers for enticing the Duke of Wellington's birds to local guns. When the Jubber Thickings delivered winter milk, they donned hoary sacks; children sang: 'Do you like foxes? Do you like chickens? Do you like kissing Jubber Thickings?' TB was rife and one victim lived on an iron bed in Willett's Field. If the Misses Bawtree didn't like sermons, they walked out; coachman Charlie Clarke once whipped a would¬be robber andJack Matar vied with Daniel Sanders for the 'boardie' trade. Dodger Gray cooked hedgehogs while the Saracen's Head welcomed penny on the liners and dubious ladies; the Great Hall hosted the Bachelors' Ball and Emma Dup Pope gathered cress, smoked a pipe and invented a shopping trolley. Courting couples slithered across the Stort on the aptly named Roly Croke. Size: Octavo (standard book size). 144 pages. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. 000750215X Stace, Clive A. & Michael J. Crawley, Alien Plants (New Naturalist 129)
Stace, Clive A. & Michael J. Crawley
Alien Plants (New Naturalist 129)
Collins, London, 2015. First Edition, Hardcover. As New/As New. 9780007502158 The word ‘aliens’ can be used in many ways, to invoke fear, dislike and fascination. For biologists it is used to indicate organisms that have been introduced by people to new territories. In the British Isles alien plants are common, conspicuous, pestiferous, beautiful, edible – and can be both useful and harmful. Over the last fifty years, the study of alien plants has progressed from an eccentric hobby, enabling amateur botanists to increase the total of wild plants that they could record, to the full-blown sciences of invasion ecology and alien genetics. Alien species no longer present an optional extra, but must be accepted as an integral part of mainstream botanical investigation. The amount and breadth of data that has been accumulated on alien plants in the British Isles is exceptional. The subject has become familiar both to naturalists and the general public, due to such diverse topics as damage to the environment by Japanese Knotweed and New Zealand Pigmyweed, the attraction of bees and butterflies to cities by such plants as Buddleja, the court cases involving Leylandii hedges, the threats to the purity of our native Bluebell by the mass planting of its Spanish relative, and the cultivation of new sorts of Christmas tree. In this important addition to the New Naturalist series, Stace and Crawley provide a comprehensive overview of the many plants that have become an integral part of the British wild flora and a unique insight into why alien plants are so important. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. xiv + 626. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. in original shrink-wrap protection. Dust Jacket un-clipped. Gilt titles spine. green cloth.
