Why have some villages remained villages whilst others have disappeared or grown into towns and cities? Whether you live in a city suburb, a midland town or a rural village, its local history will follow a general pattern - of change from open fields to enclosed land, from village to town to city. The exciting thing is that wherever you live this pattern of change is still visible. This book concentrates on these patterns and shows how, with a receptive eye, informed research and a little patience you can discover the History on Your Doorstep:"; loosely inserted newspaper clipping about the author; previous owner's name on pre-title page; light edge-wear & slight bumping to corners; including index - 152 pages. Rawcliffe, Carole & Richard Wilson (Editors) with Christine Clark
Norwich Since 1550
Hambledon and London, London, 2004. First Edition, Hardcover (Original Cloth). Near Fine Condition/Near Fine. 9781852854508 Norwich remained the second largest city in England until the eighteenth century. Its history over the last 450 years is one of exceptional interest. ‘Norwich since 1550’ is a full account of the post-medieval history of the city and covers all aspects of Norwich life, including its population, housing, churches and chapels, politics, work, education, arts, architecture and medical care. It brings out Norwich's individuality and shows how it became the city it is today. While Norwich changed and developed in many ways over the centuries, its textiles could not compete with those of the northern boom towns of the Industrial Revolution. Instead it found a role as a regional and banking capital. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. 604 pages. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. in archive acetate film protection. 0713430796 Reeve, F. A (Introduction and Commentaries by), Victorian and Edwardian Cambridgeshire from Old Photographs
Reeve, F. A (Introduction and Commentaries by)
Victorian and Edwardian Cambridgeshire from Old Photographs
B. T. Batsford, London, 1983. Reprint, Hardcover (Original Cloth). Near Fine Condition/Near Fine. 9780713430790 There is a quality of timelessness about the old photographs in this book. They record a pre-Industrial Revolutionary Cambridgeshire where hand flails were commonplace, a good hurdle-maker was a man of note, and woad was still grown for dyeing. The book is arranged in such sections as Towns and Villages, Rural Crafts and Industries, Special Occasions, Transport, People and Sport. There are pictures here of the activities particularly associated with the County: skating championships, peat cutting, osier tripping and soft fruit cultivation; as well as of subjects of more general interest: market days, horse carriages, windmills, royal occasions and village 'feasts'. The photographers whose work is represented include local men such as F. ]. Smith of Cottenham and J. R. Cooper of Burwell, national celebrities like Francis Frith, and - typically, in what is so often an anonymous art - many more whose names have not been preserved. Anonymous or otherwise, the work of these photographers is often of an aesthetic quality which is as striking as the people and events they depict. F. A. Reeve's long years of residence in Cambridge, and his standing as a local historian, pre-eminentlv qualify him to write the Introduction and picture commentaries to a book which makes a distinctive contribution to the social history of Cambridgeshire in the period from the 1850s to the First World War. Unpaginated. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. 120 pages. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. Dust Jacket un-clipped. Gilt titles spine. blue cloth; illustrated by 154 b/w. photo's..
