Newton, Ian
Bird Populations (New Naturalist 124)
William Collins, London, 2013. First Edition, Hardcover. Fine Condition/Fine. 9780007429530 In this addition to the New Naturalist series, Ian Newton explores bird populations and what causes their fluctuation - food supplies, competitors, predators, parasites, pathogens and human activity. The combination of a rapidly expanding human population, a predominantly utilitarian attitude to land, central government policy on land use and increasing mechanisation have combined to promote massive changes in land use in recent decades than at any previous comparable period. These developments have in turn brought huge changes in bird habitats and populations; some species dependent on the old landscapes declined, while others have increased. Over the same period, changing public attitudes to wildlife allowed previously scarce bird species to recover from past onslaughts, while climate warming has promoted further changes. In this seminal new work, Ian Newton sets out to explain why different bird species are distributed as they are, and changed over the years in the way that they have. The regular watching and study of birds now provides a source of recreation and pleasure for very large numbers of people, while continued monitoring of bird numbers can also alert us to impending environmental problems. For all of us, a world with fewer birds would be a poorer place. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. xii + 596. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. in archive acetate film protection. Oliver, J. R., Monumenta de Insula Manniae, or a Collection of National Documents Relating to the Isle of Man. (set of Three Volumes)
Oliver, J. R.
Monumenta de Insula Manniae, or a Collection of National Documents Relating to the Isle of Man. (set of Three Volumes)
The Manx Society, Douglas, Isle of Man, 1860-62. First Edition, Hardcover (Original Cloth). Very Good Condition/No Dust Jacket. publication numbers IV, VII & IX of The Manx Society for Publication of National Documents; Number of copies printed: Vol.1 (315); Vol. 2 (311); Vol. 3 (300); pre-title page of Manx Society giving date established (1858), logo, volume number, & date of publication, followed by list of officers of the society to front of each volume. This collection of documents relating to the Isle of Man was undertaken at the request of the Manx Society, with the view of giving to the public such monuments as are extant of its early history. This little spot, for a long period, has played no insignificant part in-the destinies of the United Kingdom; and from its connection with foreign States, and the changes undergone, must always prove a source of attraction to the archaeologist, the historian, and the statesman. Hitherto no effort has been made to form a series of muniments illustrative of its early state, and such few excerpts as we already possess have, in the majority of instances, been taken from defective and uncertain sources. In arranging the materials of the Monumenta, the author has endeavoured to follow the originals as closely as circumstances would allow, both as respects their literary as well as historic order; and in every case where these have not been accessible, recourse has been had to the most approved standard works, as Rymer's Foedera, the publications of the Record Commission, the Patent and Parliamentary Rolls, and these, with the Harleian, Cottonian, and Additional Manuscripts in the British Museum, form the basis of the present collection. Addenda to latter part of the book. 2! - page appendix relating to the Manx society. Binder's small label inside rear covers vols. 1 & 3. Some pages remain uncut. Parker, Rowland
The Common Stream
Paladin/Granada, St Albans, Hertfordshire, 1976. Reprint, Softcover. Very Good Condition. 9780586082539 This is the story of an English village - or perhaps more of the English village - for though the setting is Foxton, in Cambridgeshire, built around its now almost vanished stream, the essential facts are true of a myriad of such places all over England. For thirteen years Rowland Parker has devoted himself single-mindedly to discovering what went on in Foxton, from the first traces of human settlement two thousand years ago to the present day. By archaeological excavation, from early histories, from oral tradition, by long laborious research among the manor court rolls, the land tax returns, the wills, the terriers, the bishops' registers, he has built up a staggeringly complete picture of the village and those who lived in it. It is probably true to say that he has found out more about the history of Foxton than is known about any other village of comparable age in England, perhaps even in the world. And from this mass of material he has conjured - life. For 'THE COMMON STREAM' makes real the human beings who have lived in Foxton since man first left traces there. It tells how they lived, what they ate and wore, the games they played, the hardships they endured. It is a story of continuity - for the human stream goes on for ever; and yet of change - for it is hard indeed to see in the life of Foxton today many features in common with that even of one hundred years ago. It is the story of the English people; scholarly, authoritative, yet told with a humanity and understanding which bridges the centuries and makes the past come miraculously alive. 3-page publisher's books list to rear. Men of Dunwich : The Story of a Vanished Town (proof copy)
Collins, London, 1978. Publishers Proof Copy, Softcover. Near Fine Condition. 9780002115773 Old Dunwich no longer exists. What was once one of the most prosperous ports in England can now be seen only as crumbling shapes under the sea. From the information he discovered in long misplaced or forgotten manuscripts - Court Records. Parent Rolls and Inquisitions, the Red Book of the Exchequer - Rowland Parker has recreated the vibrant community of Dunwich, as it was during the Middle Ages. The author shows how the development of the town was dictated not by wars and pestilences, but by details such as the price of salted herrings and the duty levied on a vat of wine. Prominent throughout the narrative is the greatest and most ancient of protagonists, the force that made Dunwich rich and finally destroyed her: the sea itself. Men of Dunwich is social history at its best, the imaginative story of a changing village, its inhabitants. and visitors. Collier Books, New York, 1961. First Edition, Paperback. Very Good/N/A. illlust. by one b/w. map; "headlines carrying news of the war in Europe took second place one day in 1915 when the Denver Rocky Mountain News carried this eight-column streamer: INDIAN BATTLE RAGES, 3 DEAD, TOWN IS IN PERIL. The battle was the "Ute War"- the last struggle of the American Indian to save his lands from range-hungry cattlemen. The murder of an obscure sheepherder and the indictment of a Ute Indian touched off the war, but its roots lay deep in history. In this fascinating book Forbes Parkhill tells how and why the Indian resisted the white man's civilization and the price he paid."; previous owner's name in red to pre-title page; a neat, tight copy; incld. index - 127 pages. The Isles of Scilly (New Naturalist 103)
HarperCollins (Harper Collins), London, 2007. First Edition, Hardcover. Near Fine Condition/Near Fine. 9780002201506 About 30 miles south-west of Land's End is the low group of rocks and islands that form the Isles of Scilly. Mysterious, romantic and beautiful, they have long exercised the imagination of story tellers and historians. In this New Naturalist volume she examines the many aspects that make the islands and their flora and fauna so unique: their geography, geology and climate, the people of the islands, the way they used the land, and its present day management. She brings to life the major kinds of habitats found in Scilly: the heathlands, the coast, cultivated fields, and wetlands. She also discusses the people who have been important in the study of the island flora and fauna, and tells the story of the rise in popularity of the islands for birdwatchers. Down Your Street, Cambridge Past & Present: Volume I Central Cambridge
The Pevensey Press, Cambridge, 1983. Reprint, Paperback, Illustrated by: Photo's. Very Good/N/A. 9780907115168 b/w. map frontis; "Side by side, the M.A. and the mechanic, men in broad cloth and boys in fustian." John Pink was describing users of the Cambridge Free Library (in "The Cambridge Public Free Library, Its Rise and Progress", Cambridge, 1882), but his words are still relevant and apply to the people we meet in the pages of this book. In the streets of Cambridge people mingle - those who make the city, those who have been made by the University, long-term resident and transient undergraduate. Unlike many historians of Cambridge, Sara Payne studies the whole community, giving equal attention to town and gown. She takes us inside the colleges, offices and shops that dominate the streets of the city centre to meet the individuals behind counter or desk; and she goes into the homes of citizens to learn their stories and memories, which have been recorded in no other book - an impressive claim, for new and antiquarian bookshops contain dozens of shelves of studies of Cambridge, thousands of pages of learned and detailed texts. Sara Payne has had access to virtually all of them, and to more besides, thanks to the enthusiasm of John Pink and his Library Committee, who set out in 1855 to collect "every scrap" relating to the town and county, and whose work has been continued ever since in the Cambridgeshire Collection of the Central Library. In 1921 Arthur Beales Gray published his marvellous book "Cambridge Revisited", which has much in common with the present work. They both started as a series of articles in local newspapers, they both contain information that is not readily accessible or has never been published before, and they both contain historical and contemporary notes on Cambridge streets. Much of what Gray saw in 1921 still survives, and it is fascinating to follow the same routes with Sara Payne and note the changes. A neat & clean copy; including list of contents, foreword, preface, & bibliography. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. 176 pages. no Dust Jacket as published.. Down Your Street, Cambridge Past & Present: Volume II East Cambridge
The Pevensey Press, Cambridge, 1984. First Edition, Paperback, Illustrated by: Photo's. Very Good/N/A. 9780907115199 b/w. map frontis; "Following the highly successful first volume of Down Your Street, Central Cambridge, and again in response to public demand, this book brings together articles on East Cambridge from Sara Payne's ever-popular series in the Cambridge Weekly News. Oral testimony, documentary record and photographic evidence again combine to reveal the identity of the individual streets that give a neighbourhood its character. This time, however, the story is about part of the City that tourists seldom see but thousands of Cambridge residents, past and present, have been born and brought up in: the area that includes Barnwell, Romsey, St Matthew's and the Kite. Open fields in the Middle Ages, it was still agricultural land in the 1830s; then speculative building and the advent of the railway filled it with narrow streets of terrace houses for Cambridge's new workforce. Sara Payne charts the growth and vividly evokes the corporate life of these densely populated streets in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, especially their strong community spirit - a spirit that has lasted into the current era of renovation, gentrification, and proliferating local craftsmanship and small businesses, and has played its part in the crucial decision-making about the future of the area that was in progress while the articles were being written. The book also traces the origins of some of Cambridge's most attractive residential streets - north, west and south of New Square - following the fortunes of the developer-architect Charles Humfrey, who owned the land. A fascinating selection of b/w. photographs old and new again enhances the text, many of them from the archives of the Cambridgeshire Collection. Like its predecessor, this volume will appeal to all who have an interest in local history, and to everyone who has ever lived in, worked in, or visited Cambridge."; a neat & clean copy; including titles, contents, foreword, preface, & bibliography Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. 143 pages. no Dust Jacket as published.. Images of Cambridge
Breedon Books Publishing Co. Ltd. Derby, Derbyshire, 1994. First Edition, Hardcover (Original Cloth). Near Fine Condition/As New. 9781873626818 IMAGES OF CAMBRIDGE is a unique picture of one English city during the 20th century. Spanning the period from the death of Queen Victoria to the present day, and with a glance forward to possible developments, the book covers Cambridge from King's College to the suburbs of King's Hedges, and from the first bus to the 'Green Bicycles'. It brings together photographs from a wide range of sources, from formal groups to family snapshots, most never before published in book form, and draws extensively upon the Cambridgeshire Collection at the Central Library in Lion Yard and the archives of the Cambridge Evening News. Looking behind the fine historic faces that help turn a relatively small town into a world city, the book charts the developments as they happened. It demonstrates slum clearance and house building, the growth of the Arbury estate, changing shopping patterns with small shops making way for Lion Yard and the Grafton Centre, traffic - Mitchams corner by day and night - and the new Elizabeth Way Bridge which solved the city's notorious problems for a brief period. With the Cambridge University it covers rag-day activities, new colleges and departments and May ball breakfasts in Fitzroy Street - just a few steps away from the new Anglia Polytechnic University. Its chronological arrangement makes it possible for the reader to see Cambridge as they first knew it, either as a child in the 1920s, an an undergraduate in the 1950s or a resident in the 1980s. They can then see how and when the changes occurred or turn back the pages to discover what had happened in previous decades. It is a book for every resident, every student, every visitor, for it puts the glory of the university architecture into the context of a working and thriving city. Pierson entitled "The M-Factor in American History" & inscribed: "for Frank, who knows more about this than anyone - George"; "In this profound and stimulating study, G. W. Pierson argues that moving indeed has a neglected and deep significance for Americans. Beginning as explorers, empire builders, pilgrims, and refugees, we have been moving ever since - not only toward the Western frontier but townward and cityward, too, and from farm to farm, from state to state, from 'home' to 'home.' Mr. Pierson shows how these restless habits have affected our language, our laws, our economy, our landscape, our homes, our life styles, our entire society. The fact that we define success in terms of motion, and failure in its opposite, is just one of the startling ways in which our propensity for movement has permeated the very core of our psyches."; a clean copy in a protected, price-intact D/J.; the text of this book is set in 'Caledonia' (a Dwiggins typeface design); 290 pages plus index. New Masters : Northern Planters During the Civil War and Reconstruction
Yale University Press, New Haven, Connecticut, 1982. Second Edition, Paperback. Very Good/N/A. 9780300028829 white titles spine; cover illustration shows: 'Solution of the Labor Problem in rbe South' from Harper's Weekly, 1865; "provides an insightful analysis of the effort to transform the South into a free labour society. Building upon existing regional studies, Powell takes his readers into the plantation fields and country stores where blacks and whites fought decisive battles over the meaning of emancipation. The book tells this critical story from the perspective of outsiders who arrived as conquerors confidently imbued with boundless faith in the efficacy of free labour...
