Two Volume set in Very Good Condition with some stitching showing through at the gutter hinge join to Volume One,general rubbing along spine tips and corners.Rare seminal work with both volumes present including the plates of which there are 16 large folding plates of Dock Walls,Quay Walls,Lock-Gates,Sections of Breakwaters,Harbours British and Colonial,Lighthouses beacons and buoys etc etc.The plates are in great condition with only minor edge wear.Gilt titles to spines remain bright.There is one former owner's name to the top edge of both volumes on title page plus there is one small Belfast bookseller's ticket to the bottom edge of the front pastedown of Mullan & Son.In addition there is an old Builder's receipt of supplies laid in from Dixon & Campbell (Belfast) and dated 1st Sept 1890 with costings. The Author was a Professor of civil engineering at University College London, Leveson Francis Vernon-Harcourt (1839-1907) and he drew on considerable practical experience, having worked most notably on London's East and West India docks.This important work discusses natural and artificial harbours,the impact of waves and tides and currents and also talks about general principles of construction.Two Volumes Vol 1 702pp Vol 2 Plates plus 32 page publisher's catalogue First Edition [1885].
