Crumb, Robert [Spiegelman, Alessandrini, Mason], Small But Significant Archive Regarding the Translation of the "Crumb" Biography Signed
Crumb, Robert [Spiegelman, Alessandrini, Mason]
Small But Significant Archive Regarding the Translation of the "Crumb" Biography Signed
Winter's Calif, Robert Dennis Crumb, 1977. First Edition. R. Crumb. First Edition. Signed by Spiegleman, Crumb, Mason. Crumb, Robert [Spiegelman, Alessandrini, Mason]. SMALL BUT SIGNIFICANT ARCHIVE REGARDING THE TRANSLATION OF THE "CRUMB" BIOGRAPHY. In the late 1970's Montreal writer & comic book collector, William J. Mason spent several years working on a translation of one of the earliest biographies of the pre-eminent underground comic artist, Robert Crumb originally written in France by Marjorie Alessandrini. Mason spent several years on the project, had the approvals of Alessandrini & the support of Crumb but the project never materialized. What we have here is a fine small archive of Crumb letters related to the undertaking containing wonderful content. The file consists of three important letters [5 tight pages] to Bill Mason, the translator of the French biography called CRUMB, including his copy of CRUMB [in very good condition with his notes scattered throughout] with Mason's ownership signature dated 1977, along with a lengthy Maus postcard addressed to Mason from Art Spiegelman / Maus, June '79, concerning Crumb, along with a fine 2 page letter from Marjorie Alessandrini, dated Paris, April 24th 1979, to Bill Mason dealing with her recommendations for publishing contacts for CRUMB in the US, including comments about Masons fine translation and her delight with Crumbs approval of the work in progress. 1 - [Crumb, Robert] Art Spiegelman / Maus. APS, June 1979, on Spiegelman's own illustrated postcard, in fine condition. Spiegelman talks about a possible visit to Montreal in August & thanks Mason for the articles and the translation of the Crumb piece which he found "interesting" "(Crumb's America" far more so). I read the entire Tales From The Crypt books recently. A[nd] thought they represented an (unconscious) America. Jewish postwar response to the holocaust. The flip-side of Weird Science's preoccupation with Hiroshima and the Cold War. Do you see that too - or should I elaborate. Oh well back to Maus. All the best / Art. regards from F. [with Maus illustrated]. Superb example. with 2 - Crumb, Robert. Als to Bill Mason [Winters Calif.],dated Sept. 4th 1978. 1 lengthy page in Crumb's neat small hand. In part - "Dear Mr. Mason / Thank you for sending me the translation of M. Alessandrini's book about me. I'm overwhelmed . / Needless to say, I was completely absorbed and fascinated by her analysis of me .to see how she interpreted and intellectualized my crazy comics. / this is the first really heavy Freudian-type of criticism I've ever read of my sex stuff. with 3 - Crumb, Robert. Als to Bill Mason [Winters Calif.],dated Dec 6th 1978. 1 compact page in Crumb's neat small hand. In part - " Bill / Thanks very much for the latest chapter of the "Allessanrini Nails Crumb" series. it's very embarrassing but intensely fascinating. it's always delicious to read about yourself, and the more probing, the better. it's narcissistic. with 4 - A particularly informative & interesting lengthy biographical & historical letter that is unique in content. Crumb, Robert. Als to Bill Mason [Winters Calif.],dated August 11th, 1979. Very lengthy 3 page letter in Crumb's neat small hand about the chapters sent to him, adding his own comments & corrections. In part - " . I: 2/ Underground comics & the counterculture: Page 11: She says 'Crumb's frustration . led him to become the first artist to publish a comic book using the methods of the underground press'. This is incorrect. I was preceded by at least two others, maybe more, Jack Jackson published 'God Nose' in Texas around 1965, or possibly even '63. Joel Beck published several comic books in 1965 & '66 in /San Francisco. 'ZAP' was, I suppose the first really successful underground comic." / Page 14: 'Cu##' Comics - it was mostly a solo book by Rory Hayes but it contains one page by Jay Lynch and one by Kim Deitch. I doubt the story about most of the print run being destroyed. / Actually, the last and the filthiest of the little dirty books was "FELCH. Ill.: R. Crumb.

The Western Reserve and Its Medical Traditions: An Address Delivered at the Dedication of the New Medical Building . By Harvey Cushing, M.D. , Professor of Surgery, Harvard Medical School
Cleveland, Privately printed, 1924, 1924. 1st Edition. Soft cover. 1st Edition. Soft cover. Signed by Author. Cushing, Harvey, M.D. THE WESTERN RESERVE AND ITS MEDICAL TRADITIONS: An Address Delivered at the Dedication of the New Medical Building. By Harvey Cushing, M.D. Professor of Surgery, Harvard Medical School. Cleveland, Ohio: Privately printed, 1924. Inscribed Family Presentation Copy. First Edition. Fine leather binding with the original paper wraps bound in. Signed by Cushing on the front cover with a brief inscription for his nephew: "Edward H. Cushing / from / H.C." Cushing family bookplate on the front pastedown with the ownership signature of E. H. Cushing. The bookplate, designed by Harvey Cushing himself, incorporates his family crest and motto, along with the initials of the long line of doctors from the Cushing family and the years they graduated medical school. Cushing signed with his initials "HC" when the recipient was family or close friend. For those inscriptions to folks he did not know well, he signed in full. Handsomely bound in half-leather over burgundy cloth. Gilt spine title and ruling. Original printed gray paper covers bound in. 8vo. 33pp followed by (50) blank leaves evidently added by the binder to enhance the appearance of the volume for the Cushing family. Small binders ticket on rear pastedown (W.A. De Podesta / Art Book Binder / Cleveland.) Map illustration facing the first page of text. A very good or better copy with sound, tight binding. Some light rubbing and wear to the extremities and along the outer joints. Modest age-toning to the endpapers and some darkening of the fore-edge areas adjacent to the leather corners. Text pages clean and unmarked. No creasing, tears or other flaws to the paper covers. A superb Cushing item (1869-1939), noted American neurosurgeon, an innovator of brain surgery, and the first to describe Cushings syndrome. Often called the father of modern neurosurgery, Cushing was a professor at Harvard starting in 1911, later served in a medical capacity with allied forces in World War I, and was with the Yale University School of Medicine from 1933 until his retirement in 1937. His literary credits include a 1926 Pulitzer Prize for his biography of another medical pioneer, Sir William Osler. Cushing Bibliography no. 224. "The essay shows evidence of much patient research, but as with the 'Osler' it was obviously a labor of love, since there was nothing that stirred him [Cushing] more than the stories of his pioneering forebears on both sides of the family who, discontented with their lot in New England journeyed to the Western Reserve where they set up their own vigorous way of life, their schools, and their traditions in medicine" - Fulton, Harvey Cushing, pp. 511. A very nice example of this very desirable Cushing publication uncommon in any condition, and unique as a family association. Custom slipcase in fine condition. [30754] $3250. .

Davies, W. Robertson, Shakespeare's Boy Actors
Davies, W. Robertson
Shakespeare's Boy Actors
London, J.M. Dent & Sons, 1939. 1st Edition. Hardcover. 1st Edition. Hardcover. First edition of the author's rare first book. 8vo. pp. vii, 207, [1] [Bibliography]. Publisher's [electric] blue cloth covered boards, clean blue topstain, gilt-lettered at the spine with the blind-embossed crest on the front cover. Eight black & white plates. A very nice, near fine or better copy, in a very good or better copy of the rare [pc] illustrated white dustwrapper showing minimal use; 1 tear neatly mended on the verso of the back panel. An excellent, bright, unfaded example of this Davies highspot & in definite collector's condition. Davies account of the life & training of the Elizabethan boy actors, a consideration of their particular abilities & shortcomings, & discussion of the extent to which these actors set free or hampered Shakespeare in his female characterizations. Very scarce indeed. Most of the edition was pulped to accommodate the paper shortage of the war years. Perhaps a few hundred copies were actually sold which accounts for its infrequent appearance on the market. In the last twenty-five years, less than a dozen copies have surfaced in varying states of perfection or lack thereof, usually without dustwrapper, in both the Toronto & Montreal markets. .

"Portlock and Dixon, who had been with Captain Cook, made this expedition to the northwest coast of America to collect furs for a group of London merchants. Portlock, the Commander-in-Chief, was on the King George. The expedition left Gravesend August 29, 1785, and arrived at the Sandwich Islands via Cape Horn in May 1786. The mouth of Cook's River in Alaska was reached July 18 and the rest of the summer was spent in sailing down the Coast as far as Nootka Sound. The expedition wintered in the Sandwich Islands and in 1788 proceeded to Prince William Sound where they met Captain Meares. The vessels parted company in May, with Portlock exploring the Alaskan coast and Dixon sailing again for Nootka Sound, where he named 'Dixon's Entrance' and the 'Queen Charlotte Islands.' The furs were sold in Canton, China, and both ships, after a most successful voyage, arrived back in England by way of Cape Good Hope in the summer of 1788. "The account, except for the introduction by Dixon and the two appendices, is in a series of forty-nine letters signed 'W.B.' The writer was William Beresford, a Quaker who, says Dixon in his introduction, 'has been totally unused to literary pursuits, and equally so to a sea-faring life.' Notwithstanding this, his letters, corrected by Dixon on nautical points, make good reading and the book is an excellent authority for the early days of fur trading on the northwest coast" (Streeter). Dixon also contributed the valuable maps. The work is sometimes confused with Portlock's account of the voyage, published the same year under the same title. Bell B204. Howes D-365. JCB II 3270.
