Gustafson, Ralph, Alfred the Great. Signed
Gustafson, Ralph
Alfred the Great. Signed
London, Michael Joseph, 1937. 1st Edition. Hardcover. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Signed by Author. First Edition of poet Ralph Gustafson's second book, Inscribed by him on the front free endpaper. "For Mamie - affectionately Ralph, 1937." Additionally, with an extraordinary 1pp. TLS laid-in, dated March 9, 1990, in part, explaining the dedication, the scarcity of the book itself - most copies having been destroyed in the London Blitz and his thoughts for writing the play. "Alfred the great was a result of my interest in Alfred as a figure who stemmed the tide of the invading Danes as Churchill & the Battle Of Britain stemmed the Nazi invasion. I used Alfred as a contemporary symbol of opposition to Fascism even though I, of course, when I wrote the play, I did not know of the 1940's. In the way of youth who dream, I thought Nicholas Medtner might use Alfred as a libretto for an opera!" A very good or better copy in red cloth, silver titles to the spine in a bright, fresh excellent dustwrapper with one thumbnail chip at the heel of the spine. Very nice indeed Gustafson won the Governor General's Award 1974 for Fire on Stone. He was appointed to the Order of Canada in 1992. /Dust Jacket Included.

1963. One page ALS, double sides, on personal Mrs. Ernest Hemingway cream coloured note card. SIZE: 5" x 5 1/2", folded to 2 1/2" x 5 1/2" written in blue ink. Dated: February 24, 1963. One page ALS, double sides, on personal Mrs. Ernest Hemingway cream coloured note card. SIZE: 5" x 5 1/2", folded to 2 1/2" x 5 1/2" written in blue ink. Dated: February 24, 1963. Signed by Author. Mary Welsh was a reporter and Ernest Hemingways's forth and final wife. She met Ernest Hemingway in Paris in 1944 during the war, when she was a correspondent for the London Bureau of Time Inc. The couple married in Cuba in 1946. It was Mary, who discovered her husband's body after his suicide in Ketchum, Idaho on July 2, 1961 and who later edited three of his works. The letter speaks of Ava Gardner who was a close friend of Ernest since 1957 and starred in his films. Mary also comments to her friend Don, what she thought about a review in The New Yorker Magazine. Front Side: "2-24-63 Dear Don Gold - Thank you and do excuse my excessive chattering-" Inside: like an unrepressed squirrel. I'll be seeing Ava soon - or hearing from her and will ask in many ways she is unlike what I think of as movie stars- seems to prefer keeping her private body, soul and spirit problems privately. Thank you for the book reviews. Mailer is deluded, I think - Wilson in THE NEW YORKER much more sinister- Best Mary H." As a result of this, Mary sent a letter to the editor March 1 1963 to dispute some claims Mr. Edmund Wilson wrote about Hemingway in the Morley Callaghan book "That Summer in Paris that was published in The New Yorker February 23, 1963. In excellent condition. .

Herschel], John. Brett, William
The Principles of Astronomy. Part I. Containing Plane Astronomy Signed
London, Cambridge: Printed by J. Smith.sold by T. Stevenson, Cambridge and Longman and Co. London, 1832. First Edition. Soft cover. First Edition. Soft cover. Signed by Author. PRESENTATION COPY: Inscribed on the front free end-papers: "Sir JOHN HERSCHEL with the author's compts," Dr. Sydney Ross's Copy. Part I only (Part II published separately in 1833), 8vo, ix (ii blank), [i] errata, 248 pp. Engraved illustrations and woodcut diagrams within the text. Occasional light spotting; repaired tear to title page. Original navy blue cloth, extremities bumped, spine slightly faded, paper label on spine. Entirely uncut and unopened. PRESENTATION COPY & with the Herschel Collingwood stamp at the head of the title & of page 1. FIRST EDITION. In his Preface the author states that he has taken "much curious information" from the Philosophical Transactions, more particularly from the papers of Sir W. Herschel. Sir John Herschel [1792 - 1871]. Sir John Herschel was a scientist and astronomer like his father, Sir William Herschel [ who discovered the planet Uranus] . In 1809 he entered the University of Cambridge; in 1812 he submitted his first mathematical paper to the Royal Society, of which he was elected a fellow the following year. An accomplished chemist, Herschel discovered the action of hyposulfite of soda on otherwise insoluble silver salts in 1819, which led to the use of "hypo" as a fixing agent in photography. In 1839, independently of William Henry Fox Talbot, Herschel also invented a photographic process using sensitized paper. It was Herschel who coined the use of the terms photography, positive, and negative to refer to photographic images. In 1820 Herschel became a founding member of the Royal Astronomical Society. From 1833 until 1838, his astronomical investigations brought him and his family to the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa, where he met Julia Margaret Cameron, who became a lifelong friend. In 1850 Herschel was appointed master of the Mint, but he resigned six years later due to poor health. His remaining years were spent working on his catalogs of double stars and of nebulae and star clusters. From the library of noted scholar, Dr. Sydney Ross, Emeritus Professor of Colloid Science, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, with his elegant small gilt & crimson bookplate on the front pastedown. In his later years, amongst other projects, he compiled the Catalogue of the Libraries of Sir William Herschel, Kt. & Sir John F.W. Herschel, Bart. A meaningful double association copy. .

In 1923 Buber wrote his famous essay on existence, Ich und Du (later translated into English as I and Thou), and in 1925 he began translating the Hebrew Bible into the German language. In 1930 Buber became an honorary professor at the University of Frankfurt am Main, and resigned in protest from his professorship immediately after Adolf Hitler came to power in 1933. He then founded the Central Office for Jewish Adult Education, which became an increasingly important body as the German government forbade Jews to attend public education. In 1938, Buber left Germany and settled in Jerusalem, in the British Mandate of Palestine, receiving a professorship at Hebrew University and lecturing in anthropology and introductory sociology."]. .
