Ploos van Amstel was an avid collector of Dutch drawings, and is credited with inventing the technique of printdrawing. Schreuder worked in the printing house of Ploos van Amstel.In good condition, cropped to the image edge (as always, but lacking the original support). Ploos van Amstel was an avid collector of Dutch drawings, and is credited with inventing the technique of printdrawing. Schreuder worked in the printing house of Ploos van Amstel.In good condition, cropped to the image edge (as always, but lacking the original support). Etching and engraving on hand laid paper, sheet size 509 x 409 mm., platemark 466 x 364 mm. Made by Louis Surugue (1686-ca. 1762) after David Teniers II (1610-1690), and published by Surugue in Paris in 1749.Two dampstains in the lower right margin corner, one extending slightly into the image area. Frontispiece to a set of 26 etchings with various landscapes. Plates were reworked over time. An old city gate at the center with two figures walking towards the opening; 'the city walls have crumbled to the point that the portal seems superfluous, merely signifying a liminal boundary to the landscape beyond'. The title, on the top of the gate, reads: 'AMENISSIMAE ALIQUOT REGIUNCULAE, A / I. VELDIO DELINEATAE, ET A NICOLAO IO: / HANNIS PISCATORE IN LUCEM AEDITAE.' 'The text/image juxtaposition may be intended as a play on the words "amoenus" (pleasant) and "estra moenia" (outside the walls) or "a/ab moenia" (from the walls), where one finds such pleasant places.' [quotations from Robert Fucci, 'Arcadia Unbound: Early Dutch landscape prints and the Amenissimae aliquot reginculae of 1616 by Jan van de Velde II', in Art in Print, vol 4, nr. 5 (2015), p. 4]. Frontispiece to a volume from a collection of works by Jacob Cats. Although the plate is not signed, it might be designed by Adriaen van de Venne. A man stands at the center of the composition, invested by a ray of light, while in the background a woman is holding a man by he cloack and tying to drag him to bed. The title suggests the struggle a man has to deal with between the good and the evil throughout life. l Etching, engraving and letterpress on paper; plate mark: 175 x 156 mm, total: 396 x 264 mm; some light foxing whithin passepartout frame, otherwise in very good codition.
