LUZ AFONSO, SIMONETTA AND DELAFORCE, ANGELA (TEXT); SAPIEHA, NICOLAS (PHOTOGRAPHIC ESSAY)
Palace of Queluz: The Gardens
Quetzal Editores, Lisboa. 1989, 1st Edition. Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text.; Hardcover (with dust jacket); 24 x 29 cm.; 0.915 Kg.; 136 pages with black-and-white photos.; Used book in very good condition. The dust jacket shows signs of wear, namely small scuffs.; This book explores the history of the gardens of the Royal Palace of Queluz in the 18th and 19th centuries. The renowned authors, Simonetta Luz Afonso and Angela Delaforce, based their research on coeval documentation that was dispersed around the world, part of which has been reproduced in this volume. Through the interpretation and meticulous analysis of these sources, the research team, who worked on this project for three years, was able to reconstruct the original gardens and explore the significance of garden culture during the 18th and 19th centuries. In an appendix, the authors transcribe relevant documents for the historical and aesthetical analysis of the gardens and their constructions. Besides the illustrations included throughout the book that ease the investigation, the publication ends with contemporary black and white photographs by Nicolas Sapieha, showing the garden structures in the Palace of Queluz. Very Good/Dust Jacket Included.

Collecting for the Public, Works That Made a Difference: Essays for Peter Hecht
Paul Holberton publishing, London. 2016, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 9781911300045). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover (with dust jacket); 21.6 x 26 cm; 1.267 Kg; 240 pages with 90 colour illustrations; This book celebrates a great champion of our public collections. Peter Hecht is probably best known as an art historian who has specialized in Dutch art of the seventeenth century, with a focus on its iconography and critical fortunes. His interests, however, are wide-ranging and include the history of museums and the development of public collections in the Netherlands. Throughout his career, Hetch has worked to show us why museums matter and how their collections, large or small, national or local, can make a profound difference to the lives of those who use them. As a scholar, he has shared his understanding of how collections are formed; as an expert advisor he has influenced the fate of numerous potential acquisitions; and more recently, as a curator, he has put his knowledge into practice both in a museum setting and online, helping to animate enthusiasm for the depth and breadth of collections across the Netherlands. Perhaps above all, as a passionate believer in the power of objects, he has campaigned to keep ambitions at the highest level, reminding us that no collection, however great, is ever complete and that it is always possible to do better. In this book a number of museum curators and other art historians shine their light on one or more acquisitions that have made a difference in the collections they entered, explaining why this is so and how these purchases or donations happened - from medieval to modern. We hope that this will bring people the world over to realise the importance of collecting for the public, locally, nationally and internationally and to acknowledge and encourage the role of private individuals, associations and institutions, as well as public bodies, in this vital endeavour. New/Dust Jacket Included.

WELCH, STUART CARY
Persian Painting: Five Royal Safavid Manuscripts of the Sixteenth Century
George Blazier, New York. 1996. (ISBN: 0807608130). Soft cover. Book, English text.; Paperback.; 20.5 x 28 cm; 0.5 Kg.; 127 pages with colour illustrations.; Used book with signs of wear on the exterior, namely some scuffs. Interior in very good condition.; Classical painting flourished in Iran during the sixteenth century under the aegis of the Safavid Shahs. The forty-eight colour plates reproduced here represent the most unusual and dazzling miniatures painted during this period. A semi-nomadic people of luxuriant taste, the Iranian nobility created a life-style of world within magical world: brocade tents in which the Shah and his man feasted mid-battle were ptiched in the desert; palaces opened onto fountains and gardens; lovers, bathers, game-players, and warriors all had their place within a single panorama. The artists captured it all, often spending months filling in their small paintings with minute detail to render the whole world on a single page. With their unique techniques, they applied lapis lazuli, malachite, silver, and gold throughout their art. In these exquisitely portrayed settings, a world of great luxury and delicacy unfolds on every folio - each realized in the shimmering, jewel-like paintings that delight the eye and please the mind. The author traces the historical developments of Safavid Rule, provides commentaries on each painting, and clarifies the fine points. Good/No Jacket.
