[GAME]
Englische Park. English Park. Parc Anglais.
Germany, c. 1820. Game or toy. Box 195 x 245 mm., board 350 x 455 mm. and 56 of 58 pieces, all hand coloured cut out shapes> the board a little grubby, the label badly browned and worn, the box lid split in two. The colours on the individual pieces still nice and bright. I have been unable to trace another copy. A most attractive 3 dimensional perspective construction toy, the board with slots running horizontally to insert the numbered pieces into their correct place> the slots very tight so I have been unwilling to press the pieces into place in case of damage. Some of the numbers have worn off the pieces so it is not clear where they fit, and without a key it has not been possible to establish which pieces might be lacking.

PERPETUAL CALENDAR
A Substantial Hand-Made Perpetual Calendar.
Odstock, Withsire: James Davis, 1821. A large hand made and drawn perpetual calendar in pencil, pen and ink, and watercolour, 490 x 380 mm. paper, mounted on board with wooden mechanical levers to the verso: in a modern frame. The years column has been replaced and updated to show the years 1853 - 1864> presumably this was altered every ten years showing that the calendar was in continuous use from its creation until at least the 1850s. Printed perpetual calendars started to become more common from the late 18th Century and subsequently were occasionally made by hand to occupy and amuse and are seen from time to time in scrapbooks of the nineteenth century. This example, however, of magnificent proportions, signed and dated by James David of Odstock, Wiltshire in 1821, was obviously made for ostentatious display in a country home and the replacement of the years column is a reflection of the use that was made of it.

c. 1860. Large card with pre-printed border, 315 x 235 mm. with 15 lift-the-flap leaves and 4 circular lift-the-flap flowers. PLAYING CARDS
Complete Miniature Deck of 52 Playing Cards.
c. 1860? Complete miniature deck of 52 playing cards, watercolour on card, each c. 25 x 18 mm. on thin card stock, the court cards standing single rather than double headed, the latter convention being accepted in around 1860 in England, though earlier in Europe. Probably of English origin, notwithstanding that they were found in a French flea market by a previous owner> the "duty ace" mimics the English design with the lion [more like a pussy cat] and unicorn as supporters.

DIORAMA
The Thames at Lambeth.
c. 1850. A handmade diorama in contemporary wooden glazed frame, measuring 620 x 440 mm. [730 x 550 mm. frame size] Some minor repairs, but apart from the backing paper, all the frame parts and glass are original. A stunning 'miniature' diorama scene of the River Thames at Lambeth, viewed from the opposite bank and showing Lambeth Palace, The Ship Tavern, and Wencell [Wentzell] boat builders. Together with two Thames barges, three small steam tugs and other river craft, this is an attractive and early example of the art of miniature three dimensional imaging. This can be clearly dated within a fairly narrow period: Andrew Gotleip Wentzell (not Wencell) held the Ship Tavern and traded under his own name as boatbuilder from sometime after 1847, his previous partner, Cownden being declared bankrupt in 1847> and perhaps 1852 when he entered into partnership with a Mr. Law. Even if the trading name was never changed on the side of the property, the new Lambeth Bridge (built 1860-2) is not shown, narrowing the date of the image to between 1847 and 1860. Although dioramas in some form were known in the 18th century, they were popularised in the early 19th century by Bouton and Daguerre who mounted large scenes for viewing by paying audiences. Normally these would illustrate some historical event or an impressive landscape view. Miniature dioramas, as here, came later and were not suitable for mass audience viewing, probably created for personal display, or small exhibitions. They are now commonly used in museums and galleries throughout the world, but in these early years would have been of limited interest and this survival is extraordinary. The prominence of the names on the side of the buildings, Lawrence, and Wencell/Wentzell at the Ship Tavern, suggest that this may have been commissioned for one or the other, most likely for display in the Tavern where it would have been much admired. Perhaps the small boats on the Thames were built by Wentzell. [For illustrative purposes, some of the images shown here were taken during the refixing of the glass and frame to show the diorama free of reflection and distortion.]

E & S Products, c. 1955? Two card spaceships and rules, together with the strings, in original printed envelope, 230 x 150 mm. Although the envelope has been slit open at the top end the contents appear unused, probably because the rules are rather opaque.
