Salinger, J.D., The Catcher in the Rye. Signed
Salinger, J.D.
The Catcher in the Rye. Signed
Boston, Little, Brown & Company, 1952. First Edition. Hardcover. First Edition. Hardcover. Signed by Author. Salinger, J.D. THE CATCHER IN THE RYE. Signed. Boston: Little Brown, 1952. A fine SIGNED copy of the March, 1952 reprint of the first edition. [The first issue was July, 1951]. 8vo. 277pp. black cloth, gilt. Salinger's remarkable first book, neatly signed in black fountain pen at the top of the title page. An excellent example of Salinger's elusive signature - The binding is fine; the dustwrapper very good or better with the $3.00 price present & nine reviews on the back panel replacing Salinger's photo after the first few early printings at his insistence. Custom clamshell case in very fine condition. The probable High Spot in Modern American Lit collecting, "The Catcher In The Rye is undoubtedly a 20th-century classic. It struck a popular note, particularly with young readers, who strongly identified with Holden Caulfield and his yearning for lost innocence. Salinger's novel was, and continues to be, a phenomenal success" (Parker, 300). "This novel is a key-work of the nineteen-fifties in that the theme of youthful rebellion is first adumbrated in it, though the hero, Holden Caulfield, is more a gentle voice of protest, unprevailing in the noise, than a militant world-changer. The Catcher in the Rye was a symptom of a need, after a ghastly war and during a ghastly pseudo-peace, for the young to raise a voice of protest against the failures of the adult world. The young used many voices-anger, contempt, self-pity-but the quietest, that of a decent perplexed American adolescent, proved the most telling" (Anthony Burgess, 99 Novels , 53-4). /Dust Jacket Included.

Misalliance. The Dark Lady of the Sonnets and Fanny's First Play. With a Treatise on Parents and Children. Inscribed
London, Constable and Company, 1914. First Edition. Hardcover. First Edition. Hardcover. Signed by Author. Shaw, George Bernard. MISALLIANCE. The Dark Lady Of The Sonnets And Fanny's First Play. With a Treatise on Parents and Children. Inscribed. London: Constable and Company Ltd. 1914. "It is more dangerous to be a great prophet or poet than to promote twenty companies for swindling simple folk out of their savings". First Edition. Small 8vo. 234 pp. + 2 pp. of ads. A near fine or better copy in light moss green cloth, gilt titles to the spine, t.e.g. in a bright, near fine slightly spine darkened example of the rather uncommon dustwrapper. A significant presentation copy inscribed in black fountain pen on the half-title: "To Robert Loraine, who created Hotchkiss (among / other good turns), from Bernard Shaw. / 17th May 1914". Loraine [1876-1935] was a man of action: actor-manager, soldier, aviator, Fabian & of course, a close friend to Shaw - perhaps best known as an actor he's seen most commonly on holiday with the Shaws & Harley Granville-Barker or at Fabian events. Loraine & Shaw shared political affiliations & a passion for theatre: it was Loraine who premiered as the lead in Man & Superman on Broadway, the production was massively successful & launched Shaw as a force to be reckoned with in the United States. "The whole strength of England lies in the fact that the enormous majority of the English people are snobs". - Hotchkiss in GETTING MARRIED first performed in 1908 & published in THE DOCTOR'S DILEMMA, 1911. Excellent example. Custom TBCL embossed cloth slipcase in fine condition. /Dust Jacket Included.

Vienna, Universal Edition, 1909. First Edition. First Edition. Signed by Dame Ethel Smyth. The Wreckers (opera) program pp.42, 5 3/8" x 8 1.2" The Wreckers was first performed in English at Her Majesty's Theatre in London in 1909. At age 71, she fell in love with writer Virginia Woolf who was also very involved in the women's suffrage movement and they both used their writings to express their political views. Woolf encouraged Smyth to write music and her own autobiography. According to critics, Smyth most famous composition, "The Wreckers," in 1906. praised it as one of the most important English operas. Political activist Dame Ethel Smyth officially became a Grammy winner in 2021, 76 years after her death. Her 1930 2-part symphony THE PRISON took home the Best Classical Solo Vocal Album category at the 2021 awards ceremony performed by soloist Sarah Brailey. The Anthem "The March of Women," a battle song for England's women's movement was composed by Dame Ethel Smyth in 1911. Authors Take Sides on the Spanish War - Rare Pamphlet
London, Left Review by Furnell and Sons Ltd, 1937. First Edition. First Edition. RARE pamphlet AUTHORS TAKE SIDES ON THE SPANISH WAR 6 1/4" x 9 3/4" pp.28 plus cover printed on cream colour paper inside with black ink and red ink, recto verso on the thicker cover stock. Slight wear on the outside right cover as per photos otherwise in fine shape. The editors of AUTHORS TAKE SIDES ON THE SPANISH WAR, which was published in London by the Left Review in 1937, posed two questions to a list of influential poets and writers of the 1930's: "Are you for, or against, the legal Government and the People of Republican Spain? Are you for, or against, Franco and Fascism?" This historical and important document consists of 148 contributors and 10,000 words on their stand on fascism and democracy. Among the contributors were: Leonard Woolf, Vita Sackville-West, Aliester Crowley (with his name misspelled) T S Eliot, Ezra Pound, W H Auden, T.S. Eliot, C. Day Lewis, Rebecca West, Sylvia Townsend Warner, Evelyn Waugh, George Bernard Shaw to name but a few influencers! Some responses were long and some such as with Samuel Beckett were quite short! '¡UPTHEREPUBLIC!' This significant pamphlet is very rare and a handful can only be found in library archives.

Stewart, Mary, A Splendid Archive of a Dozen Fine Signed Letters [11 Tls +1 Ans][the Merlin Chronicles]
Stewart, Mary
A Splendid Archive of a Dozen Fine Signed Letters [11 Tls +1 Ans][the Merlin Chronicles]
Edinburgh, 5 October 1964 to 22 May 1970, 1964. First Edition. First Edition. Signed by Author. Stewart, Mary (b. Florence Elinor Rainbow, 1916- ). Scottish fiction, fantasy, and mystery writer best known for her Arthurian "Crystal Cave" series now referred to as The Merlin Chronicles which brilliantly blended historical fiction and fantasy. 79 Morningside Park, Edinburgh. 5 October 1964 to 22 May 1970 to James Keddie of Wellesley Hills, Massachusetts (Scottish born American editor & publisher, 1907- 1983, known as "Cheetah" by The Speckled Band Of Boston, the Sherlockian society of which he was a lifetime member). FINE COLLECTION OF ELEVEN LETTERS AND ONE INSCRIBED EASTER GREETINGS CARD (12 TLS, 1 TNS], most of which are aerogrammes). The friendship between fellow Scots Stewart and Keddie is revealed in this warm and enthusiastic correspondence (variously signed "Yours Ever" at first, then "Love" and "Affectionately") later on, with letters that contain a good mix of literary content and personal revelation, some discussions of Stewart's emotional states as publication dates approach, her books, her domestic challenges, their shared colleagues, writers she admires. Among her works discussed is WILDFIRE AT MIDNIGHT (1956), MADAM WILL YOU TALK? (1954, her first book), AIRS ABOVE THE GROUND (1965), THE GABRIEL HOUNDS (1967), ending with her plans to meet him as she's just about to embark on her American book tour to promote her 1970 masterpiece THE CRYSTAL CAVE ("And thanks for your good wishes for THE CRYSTAL CAVE. I hope you love it."). Other excerpts include: "This is publication day over here, and I combat my sinking, nervous feeling which gets worse instead of better each time I place my bet with the public and put myself at its mercy." "The reviewers are sharpening their claws for anything that breathes of success and popularity as this MUST mean, they think, that it's BAD." She discusses Rex Stout's "writing, style, and plot," and shares her grief "I was very sorry indeed about Margery Allingham." And she is particularly teasing as she discusses THE CRYSTAL CAVE as a work-in-progress: "This is a historical novel which I have been wanting to do for a very long time [and I'll] tell you a bit more about [it] but at the moment I feel it would kill it to talk about it." The letters have a few minor blemishes, light folds and their like, but generally are in NEAR FINE condition. Substantial content, an excellent archive. .
