In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, a journey to Italy was considered an indispensable part of a young man's education. On arduous coach journeys, they pursued the trail of ancient Rome and the Renaissance to Florence, Venice, Rome, and Naples. Artists soon followed them, and thus yearning also led Johann Wolfgang von Goethe south from 1786 to 1788. Goethe's Italian Journey vividly conveys his profound enthusiasm but also depicts well-organized, early tourism. Just seventy years later, the first photographers captured stations on the Grand Tour on gelatin silver plates. Giorgio Sommer (1834-1914), like Goethe from Frankfurt am Main, and Carlo Naya (1816-1882) produced intensely poetic views of St. Mark's Square, the Colosseum, a smoking Vesuvius, and beautiful fisherwomen on Capri. - Do these dreamlike pictures show us what Goethe saw? Comprised of large-format portrait photographs of teenagers superimposed on brightly colored monochromatic backgrounds, Babylon Babies performs an iconography of youth that goes beyond the usual clichas, confronting the viewer with independent young people whose photographic representations refuse any context and are therefore open for projection. In her multicultural cast of head shots, Lafontaine goes far beyond the United Colors of Benetton, presenting a familiar, beautiful array of youths, but never on the suspicious level of the ber youth. ¶ Hellen van Meene (Alkmaar 1972) geldt als een van de meest toonaangevende Nederlandse fotografen van haar generatie. In 2005 plaatste het Amerikaanse magazine Village Voice haar boek Portretten in de Top 25 van de beste fotoboeken van dat jaar en in 2007 stond ze in Nederland op de vierde plaats van de meest succesvolle kunstenaars Van Meene staat bekend om haar intrigerende portretten van adolescente meisjes en vrouwen. ¶ Het jaar is 1937. De 42 jarige Hongaarse beeldhouwer Arthur Fleischmann kwam vanaf Java via een kleine zeilboot aan op Bali. Een nieuw en exotisch hoofdstuk opende zich voor hem. Bewapend met een 35 mm Dolina camera en een gevoelig oog van een artiest, legde hij het leven, gewoonten en schoonheid van het Balinese volk vast in meer dan 1800 foto's. Als de dreiging van de oorlog in de Pacific er niet geweest was, zou hij voor de rest van zijn leven gebleven zijn op het mooie en rustige paradijs. Zich bezig houdend met beeldhouwen en fotograferen van de gracieuze jonge tempel dansers die zijn muzen werden. In plaats daarvan ontsnapte hij naar Australië waar hij een manuscript schreef ten geleide van zijn Balinese foto's. ¶ This book in an imposing format gathers the American series realized by Guillaume Zuili these last years. 'For the past fifteen years, Guillaume Zuili has been roaming Los Angeles where he has now settled. He makes incessant crossings there, it is also a journey through time as he could undertake in other cities of the world that he likes to translate by optical and chemical games.
