This a vintage publicity photo, not a reproduction, sent out to newspapers and periodicals of the period. Text from a printed press release tipped onto the verso reads: "DON'T FORGET MY BACK, C.B. -- What DeMille is thinking but what he isn't saying is that a screen bathing takes courage two ways, on the part of the rubber and the rubbee. Witness the famous DeMillean technique, viz. seizing the scalp firmly in the right hand and tightening the lips (yours, not Goddard's). Now, says the friend of the plumbers of America, let's try it that way."
The American actress Paulette Goddard (1910-1990) started her career as a child fashion model before performing on Broadway as a Ziegfield Girl. She appeared in several films before attaining success starring opposite Charlie Chaplin in "Modern Times" and then "The Great Dictator". Goddard married Chaplin, and was subsequently married to Burgess Meredith and Erich Maria Remarque. She and Cecil B. DeMille apparently quarreled on the set of "Unconquered" when she refused to do a stunt that would have required her to have fireballs thrown at her. She was justified as the stuntwoman who filled in for her was burned. Despite this, it is said that DeMille never forgave her and her career suffered. Very good .
