[EPHEMERA] [EUREKA COIN SHOP] [COIN COLLECTING]
Three Pieces of Ephemera : Two Check Lists from the Eureka Coin Shop and a Check List from the Tatham Stamp & Coin Company
San Francisco, CA / Springfield, MA: Eureka Coin Shop, 1953. Ephemera. Three small booklets: two from the Eureka Coin Shop, one from the Tatham Stamp & Coin Company -- all three are check lists of U. S. Coins. All three are in Very Good to Very Good+ condition and were issued without dust jackets. "Coin collecting is the collecting of coins or other forms of minted legal tender. Coins of interest to collectors often include those that circulated for only a brief time, coins with mint errors and especially beautiful or historically significant pieces. Coin collecting can be differentiated from numismatics, in that the latter is the systematic study of currency. Though closely related, the two disciplines are not necessarily the same. A numismatist may or may not be a coin collector, and vice versa." (from Wikipedia). Very Good+ .

[EPHEMERA], [PHOTOGRAPHS] [ATOMIC BOMB] [HIROSHIMA], Two Photographs of Atomic Bomb Damage in Hiroshima, Japan
[EPHEMERA], [PHOTOGRAPHS] [ATOMIC BOMB] [HIROSHIMA]
Two Photographs of Atomic Bomb Damage in Hiroshima, Japan
Hiroshima, Japan: USGS, 1945. Photograph. Hiroshima: United States Strategic Bomb Survey (circa 1945). 2 black and white gelatin silver print photographs, measuring approx. 4" x 5". There are typed captions on the reverse of each print. One print includes a large ink stamped image of the Hiroshima- Matsuyama Ferry Line. These two photographs are official United States Strategic Bomb Survey damage prints of Hiroshima (USSBS) , captured on November 28, 1945. One print shows the exterior view of the Chugoka Coal Distribution Control Company (building #12 in the survey) , the other photograph has a caption of "Building 300 ft. NWW from GZ, no Structural Damage. Both photographs include latitude and longitude coordinates. "Verbal and written accounts of the destruction of Hiroshima by atomic bomb on August 6, 1945 are well known, but photographic images of it have always been relatively rare. While the U. S. Government attempted to control the circulation of any such images following the end of World War II, the irony is that it was also the source of the largest body of photographs of the aftermath of the event. That work, made in 1945 for the United States Strategic Bombing Survey — initially classified and subsequently lost for more than 40 years...Photographers in the Physical Damage Division of the Survey were tasked with documenting the broad extent and mundane detail of atomic destruction for later analysis by architects and civil engineers. The images they made helped form the basis for civil defense architecture in the U. S, especially in the early part of the Cold War, from the design of bomb and fallout shelters to suburbanization.". (EPHEMERA) [CARTE DE VISITE] [JAPAN] [PHOTOGRAPHS]
Two Carte de Visites from Nagasaki, Japan C1880's-1890's View of the "Temple of the Devils" and the "Bund of Ohuda"
Nagasaki, Japan: No Publisher Listed, 1880. Other. B&W Illustrations; Two Carte de Visites from Nagasaki, Japan c1880-1890's. The first view is of the Bund of Oura - the waterfront where westerners were allowed, with Sampans in the water. The Second view is "Oni no Jere" The Temple of Devils on a hillside. Both cards are in Very Good+ condition, with some beginning tidemarking / foxing to the edges. "A series of encounters between the West and Japan in the 1850s ended Japan's isolationist trade policies. In particular, the treaty with Russia, signed on February 7, 1855 established Nagasaki as an open port and, further, granted extraterritoriality privileges to foreigners living in Japan. These encounters finally culminated in 1859 when the Ansei Treaties, and in particular the Harris Treaty with the United States, took effect. These treaties demanded immediate opening of ports, and also established generally unequal trade relationships between the Western powers and Japan. In 1860 development of the area around Oura Creek began; by August 15, 1862, Japanese officials ordered foreign residents of Nagasaki into this new settlement area.". Very Good+ .

(EPHEMERA) [WORLD WAR I] [WORLD WAR I BALLOONS] [BALLOON PATROLS][BALLONHALLE VON INNEN], Two Original Postcards from World War I Germany Featuring Balloons
(EPHEMERA) [WORLD WAR I] [WORLD WAR I BALLOONS] [BALLOON PATROLS][BALLONHALLE VON INNEN]
Two Original Postcards from World War I Germany Featuring Balloons
Germany: No Publisher Listed, 0. Other. B&W Illustrations; Two World War I postcards (5.5" x 3.5") in Very Good- condition. Both postcards are not filled in (with the exception of four words inked on one of the postcards). The cards are labeled: Fesselballon vor dem Aufstieg, and, Ballonhalle von Innen. One postcard has a one and a half cent stamp. "World War I was the high point for the military use of observation balloons, which were extensively deployed by both sides. The British, despite their experience in late 1800s Africa, were behind developments and were still using spherical balloons. These were quickly replaced by versions, commonly referred to as kite balloons, which were flyable and could operate in more extreme weather conditions; at first the German Parseval-Siegsfeld type balloon, and then French Caquot type dirigible. By World War I, artillery had developed to the point where it was capable of engaging targets beyond the visual range of a ground-based observer. Positioning artillery observers on balloons, generally a few miles behind the front lines and at altitude, allowed them to see targets at greater range than they could on the ground. This allowed the artillery to take advantage of its increased range." (from Wikipedia). Very Good- .

(EPHEMERA) [WORLD WAR 2] [PACIFIC THEATRE], World War II Army Letter Describing the Battle of the Philippine Sea
(EPHEMERA) [WORLD WAR 2] [PACIFIC THEATRE]
World War II Army Letter Describing the Battle of the Philippine Sea
Philippines: Self Published, 1944. Ephemera. This is a six page letter dated 11-19-44: Philippines (six leaves, handwritten on the rectos only). The pages are noticeably toned and there are several edge nicks and tears. The letter is written on official United States Army letterhead. There are official censor punches to the top left corner of each page. The author was a combatant in the Battle of the Philippine Sea -- more colloquially known as The Great Marianas Turkey Shoot. The author gives a very light hearted, but considerably detailed (especially considering it had to pass the censors) description of his part of the battle, along with an overview of the battle as a whole. Unfortunately the only names on the letter are the owners - a Carl Z, and the first letters of the recipient: Des. "The Battle of the Philippine Sea (June 19–20, 1944) was a major naval battle of World War II that eliminated the Imperial Japanese Navy's ability to conduct large-scale carrier actions. It took place during the United States' amphibious invasion of the Mariana Islands during the Pacific War. The battle was the last of five major "carrier-versus-carrier" engagements between American and Japanese naval forces, and pitted elements of the United States Navy's Fifth Fleet against ships and aircraft of the Imperial Japanese Navy's Mobile Fleet and nearby island garrisons. This was the largest carrier-to-carrier battle in history, involving 24 aircraft carriers, deploying roughly 1,350 carrier-based aircraft. The aerial part of the battle was nicknamed the Great Marianas Turkey Shoot by American aviators for the severely disproportional loss ratio inflicted upon Japanese aircraft by American pilots and anti-aircraft gunners. During a debriefing after the first two air battles, a pilot from USS Lexington remarked "Why, hell, it was just like an old-time turkey shoot down home!" ". Very Good .

ADAK, ALASKA (U. S. NAVY) (EPHEMERA), Hammerhead Lodge Menu
ADAK, ALASKA (U. S. NAVY) (EPHEMERA)
Hammerhead Lodge Menu
Adak, AK: Hammer Head Lodge, 0. Hardcover. This is a cardcover folder / menu with a decorated and stamped front cover. The interior contains two typed pages of menu items with prices under plastic holders. This menu is from circa 1955 at the Hammerhead Lodge which was the Naval Officer's mess on Adak Island, Alaska. "On 1 July 1950, the Air Force transferred Davis AFB to the United States Navy who established an anti-submarine warfare base there. Adak was most recently run by the U. S. Navy as a deployment base for P-3 Orion maritime patrol aircraft, primarily to conduct antisubmarine warfare operations against submarines and surveillance of naval surface vessels of the former Soviet Union. The Naval Air Facility was also reported to be used as a refueling stop for U-2, Dragon Lady, ultra-high altitude reconnaissance aircraft. By the 1980s there were over 6,000 Navy personnel on the islands. With the fall of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s, NAS Adak's operational viability as a front-line military installation began to wane, and in the mid-1990s a decision was made by the federal government to cease military flight operations there under the military's Base Realignment and Closure Program (BRAC). On 31 March 1997, the Navy closed Adak Naval Air Facility. The lowering of the flag for the last time ended an era that began of 31 August 1942, when U. S. Forces landed on the Aleutian Island and established an advance base there for operations against the Japanese on Kiska and Attu Islands. The Navy left behind a contingent of 30 Navy personnel and 200 civilian contractors to maintain facilities, keep the runway open and begin an environmental cleanup.". Very Good+ .

WORLD AIRWAYS, Group of Five Promotional Photos from World Airways from the Early 1970's
WORLD AIRWAYS
Group of Five Promotional Photos from World Airways from the Early 1970's
Peachtree City, GA: World Airways, 1973. Other. B&W Illustrations; This group of five promotional 8" x 10" photographs are in Near Fine condition and have typed promotional notes attached. Two of the photos show stewardesses, the other three ground the cockpit crew, a technician, and a supply room. While the descriptions have some basic details (including information on the 747C) there is no citation from the company on any of the photos. World Airlines started using 747's in the early 1970's for their commercial flights." Also, in the early 1970s, World operated three Boeing 747 aircraft and was the launch customer for the "flip nose" front-loading variant of the 747. Later, World acquired DC-10s that were retired in 2010. World experienced heavy losses in the 1980s as a result of operating scheduled passenger services. In the late 1980s, the company moved its headquarters from Oakland to Washington Dulles International Airport, acquired Key Airlines from Bain Capitals' Presidential Airways, and established ties to Malaysia Airlines. World was burdened financially as its cash was siphoned off by parent WorldCorp to support a telecommunications venture in which the parent had invested. During the first Persian Gulf War, World did a substantial amount of profitable business for the military, enabling the addition of the MD-11 to the fleet. During the mid-1990s, World operated the military passenger trunk route from Osan Air Base, Korea and Kadena Air Base, Okinawa to Los Angeles, using MD-11 aircraft. World has been headquartered near Atlanta Hartsfield International Airport. " (from Wikipedia). Near Fine .

GOLDEN GATE INTERNATIONAL EXPOSITION OF SAN FRANCISCO BAY, 1939 World's Fair Facts
GOLDEN GATE INTERNATIONAL EXPOSITION OF SAN FRANCISCO BAY
1939 World's Fair Facts
San Francisco, CA: Golden Gate International Exposition, 1939. Brochure. B&W Illustrations; This is a promotional brochure put together by the Golden Gate International Exposition to advertise the Expo. It comes with one half of the rear panel blank to be used to mail the brochure to friends, relatives and colleagues. The brochure consists of one page folded four times, with text and photos on both recto and verso with basic information about the fair - dates, map, plan of events and more. The brochure is in Very Good+ condition with just some light rubbing to the outer covers. "The idea to hold a World's Fair to commemorate the completion of the Bay Bridge and Golden Gate Bridge started from a letter to The San Francisco News in February 1933. Architects W. P. Day and George Kelham were assigned to consider the merits of potential sites around the city, including Golden Gate Park, China Basin, Candle Stick Point, and Lake Merced. By 1934, the choice of sites had been narrowed to the areas adjoining the two bridges: either "an island built up from shallow water" north of Yerba Buena Island which would go on to be named Treasure Island, or the Presidio, which had previously been used in 1915 for the Panama–Pacific International Exposition. Yerba Buena Shoals was chosen as the site in February 1935. In August 1935, a $10 million proposal using federal WPA funds for construction work was advanced, and in October of that year, Leland W. Culter, president of San Francisco Bay Exposition, Inc, announced that President Roosevelt had approved US$3,000,000 (equivalent to $55,940,000 in 2019) to help fund the cost of reclaiming land at Yerba Buena Shoals. FIRST METHODIST CHURCH (PALO ALTO, CA), The Methodist Bulletin November 20, 1949 (Hamilton Avenue at Webster Street)
FIRST METHODIST CHURCH (PALO ALTO, CA)
The Methodist Bulletin November 20, 1949 (Hamilton Avenue at Webster Street)
Palo Alto, CA: First Methodist Church, 1949. Pamphlet. B&W Illustrations; This is a tall, three-fold pamphlet from the First Methodist Church of Palo Alto. The pamphlet is in Very Good condition and was issued without a dust jacket. The pamphlet has been folded in half horizontally. Included is the worship service information (hymns, readings, etc. ) along with notes on various other upcoming events and upcoming classes, groups, etc. Including a long paragraph about "How one Family Met Invading Russians", with a true account by Muriel Lester. "First Methodist Church was established in Palo Alto in 1894, the year the city was incorporated. Land, encompassing most of the current site at Hamilton Avenue and Webster Street, had been donated and money and been pledged for construction of a church building. During the planning and construction period, the 24 charter members of the church met for Sunday services in Nortree Hall, a meeting room over a store on University Avenue. By the time the picturesque redwood church was completed two years later, the membership had grown to 58. Within the next 15 years, the membership flourished and outgrew the original redwood church. The congregation built an esthetically pleasing traditional style white stucco house of worship, dedicated in 1914, on the site of the redwood church, which had been moved to the other side of Webster for use as at a temporary meeting house during the construction. The stucco church building was enlarged and remodeled with a new parsonage in 1948, major remodeling in 1949, and a new education building and fellowship hall in 1952 (designed by Carlton Arthur Steiner, architect of the present church building, remodeled in 2000). " (from the church's website). Very Good .
