GODWIN William
Essay on Sepulchres. Or, a Proposal for erecting some Memorial of the illustrious Dead in all Ages on the Spot where their Remains have been interred. 'WHERE IS SHAKESPEAR[sic]?' SPLENDID COPY IN CONTEMPORARY CALF
W. Miller,, 1809. Sm. 8vo., First Edition, on laid paper, wanting frontispiece, two small ink stains on inner margin of title only, neat signature on blank preliminary; very attractively bound in mid-nineteenth century half calf, textured cloth boards, back gilt with five raised bands, morocco label, speckled edges, brown endpapers, a remarkably crisp, clean textual copy of a very scarce work. 'In almost every ordinary church yard we may see altar-monuments, with the upper surface and some of the sides broken to pieces, and the whole a heap of ruins, even before they are fifty years old.' Godwin develops his thesis with passion, with fascinating references to the array and state of monuments in St. Paul's and Westminster Abbey, and an account of visits to Thetford, Valle Crucis Abbey, Ewelme, Kenilworth, Reading Abbey and the Seven Churches in Ireland. He concludes with a request for an atlas or catalogue of sepulchres along the lines of a traveller's guide, to be 'of a very different measure of utility from the 'Catalogue of Gentlemen's Seats' which is now appended to the 'Book of Post-Roads through Every Part of Great Britain'. Godwin's eccentric treatise was the favourite book of his daughter Mary Shelley. Lamb, writing to Coleridge, termed it 'a very pretty, absurd book about sepulchres'. NCBEL II, 1250; Tinker 1083.

HOWARD F. E.
The Mediaeval Styles of the English Parish Church. A Survey of their Development, Design and Features. BRIGHT, CLEAN COPY
Batsford,, [1936]. 8vo., First Edition, with frontispiece, 179 fine half-tone plates on 94, and illustrations and plans in the text; blue cloth, upper board and backstrip lettered in black, covers lightly faded else a very good, bright, clean copy. Sold from an institution with its bookplate, and neat cancellation stamp on front free endpaper and rear paste-down only. Having co-operated so sgnificantly with F.H. Crossley in 'English Church Woodwork' (1917) it is very greatly to be regretted that Howard published further before his death in 1934 at the early age of 45. His renown as an ecclesiastical architect had spread - E.A. Lamborn considered him the only authority whose knowledge of ecclesiastical art in the Middle Ages could be compared with that of the late Sir William Hope. Fortunately, Howard had brought the present work so close to completion that Lamborn was able to see it through to publication with very little alteration.

RAPHAEL TUCK, pub.
Bristol Cathedral; Canterbury Cathedral; Chichester Cathedral; Exeter Cathedral; Fountains Abbey; Lincoln Minster; Peterborough Cathedral; Salisbury Cathedral; Southwark Cathedral; Wells Cathedral; Westminster Abbey; Winchester Cathedral; York Minster. REMARKABLE RUN OF TUCK'S 'CATHEDRALS'
Raphael Tuck,, [1931-1936]. 13 vols., 8vo., Mixed Editions, with coloured or sepia-toned frontispieces and very numerous sepia-toned plates, some light and occasional spotting; coloured cloth, upper boards lettered in gilt enclosing mounted coloured illustrations (not repeated in text), gilt backs, a very good, bright, clean and elegant run. Published in the early 1930s, Raphael Tuck's 'Cathedral Story' series provides accessible and easily-written accounts of the great English Cathedals and Minsters. The authors, always well-informed, were almost exclusively senior clergy of their respective institutions, and the plates are well-chosen and atmospheric. In particular, the cover watercolour illustrations are quite charming and the series as A whole has an attractive and elegant feel. This run comprises A.S. Duncan-Jones: Chichester Cathedral (1ed. 1933. SIGNED PRESENTATION COPY), Horace Munroe: Southwark Cathedral (1ed. 1933), Margaret A. Babington: Canterbury Cathedral (2ed. 1934), Charles C. Bell: York Minster (1ed. 1931), E.G. Swain: Peterborough Cathedral (1ed. 1932), J.H. Srawley: Lincoln Minster (1ed. 1933), Arthur Huxley Thompson: Exeter Cathedral (1ed. 1933), Lawrence E. Tanner: Westminster Abbey (1ed. 1932), Richard H. Malden: Wells Cathedral (2ed. 1938), Charles C. Bell: Fountains Abbey (1ed. 1932), J.M.J. Fletcher: Salisbury Cathedral (1ed. 1933), E.G. Selwyn: Winchester Cathedral (1ed. 1934), Maurice H. Fitzgerald: Bristol Cathedral (1ed. 1936). GOOD RUNS IN THIS CONDITION ARE SCARCE.

RICKMAN Thomas
An Attempt to Discriminate the Styles of English Architecture. Second Edition. [with] An Elucidation of the Principles of Architecture usually denominated Gothic. First Edition.. An Attempt to Discriminate the Styles of English Architecture. Second Edition [ with] KENDALL. An Elucidation of the Principles of Architecture usually denominated Gothic. First Edition. AN UNUSUAL GOTHIC 'DOUBLE'
Longman Hurst Rees Orme & Brown; Murray, Nornaville and Fell [and others],, [1819 ; 1818]. 2 works in one vol. 8vo., with an engraved frontispiece and 13 engraved plates (first work) and 23 engraved plates (second work), some very light spotting (mainly marginal) on plates; handsomely bound in twentieth century half calf, marbled boards, back ruled, tooled and lettered in gilt, a highly attractive bright, crisp copy, ideal as a gift or for presentation. Since the binding is lettered only for the Rickman it is possible that a previous owner did not realise that TWO important works are present here (the latter, unnamed, work being much the scarcer).Rickman provided the first systematic treatise on Gothic architecture in England. Its influence was profound, for his terminology was employed by virtually all subsequent writers; much of it, indeed, is still current today. First published in 1817 in Liverpool (where the present issue was compiled), one of its most valuable features was its descriptive list of (over 800) extant buildings illustrating the principles of English architecture and helpfully arranged by county. In this updated edition the number of buildings is greatly enlarged. Kendall's VERY SCARCE analysis is based on the ornaments, arches, columns etc., of Exeter Cathedral; the work is intended for practising architects who are taught the main elements which must be followed meticulously to achieve the pure pointed style. Kendall (1766-1829) was Surveyor of Exeter Cathedral and responsible for much restoration after about 1805. His important work was reissued once only, by Bohn in 1842. A FINE OPPORTUNITY TO ACQUIRE TWO KEY AND BEAUTIFULLY ILLUSTRATED GOTHIC TEXTS IN A SINGLE, HANDSOME BINDING.
