H E Hurst; D A F Watt
The Measurement of the Discharge of the Nile Through the Sluices of the Aswan Dam Final Conclusions and Tables of Results
Cairo, Government Press, 1928. First edition. Cloth. The first edition of this report by leading hydrologist and namesake of the 'Hurst Exponent', Harold Edwin Hurst. An important work in the field of hydrology and regarding the river Nile. With fascinating provenance. From the library of Frederic Newhouse (1883-1969), was a sometime inspector-general of Egyptian irrigation in the Sudan. This title was published as a part of a series of reports commissioned by the 'Ministry of Public Works, Egypt&apos. The Egyptian Department of Public works was established in the early 19th century and concentrated on works relating to irrigation and hydraulic engineering. It became the most respected engineering entity and regarded as a fantastic school for civil engineers in modern Egypt. This work was issued during the British Occupation Period and is number 24 of the 'Physical Department Paper&apos. Co-written by Harold Edwin Hurst and D A F Watt. Hurst was a British hydrologist from Leicester. He produced several studies on the long-term storage capacity of reservoirs and of the fluctuation in water level in the Nile. He worked in Egypt for 62 years and was heavily involved in the new Aswan High Dam project, which was built using his plan. D A F Watt was a resident engineer at the Aswan Reservoir. This technical study charts tables of the discharge of sluices as well as outlining four methods to measure discharge of the Nile. Hurst presents the results of these methods, which includes a wide range of data. The minister of public works at the time, Ibrahim Fahmy, prefaces this work by stating that 'the present report marks to the conclusion of a piece of work of great importance to Egypt which has extended over more than twenty years&apos. With four plates to the rear of the work, comprising of one photograph and three plans. An interesting and important study on the Nile and the irrigation development during the British occupation. In a quarter cloth binding with paper covered boards. Externally, generally smart. Boards have faded, and have light scattered spots. A Narrative of the Two Aerial Voyages of Doctor Jeffries with Mons. Blanchard; with Meteorological Observations and Remarks. The First Voyage, on the Thirtieth of November, 1784, from London Into Kent: The Second, on the Seventh of January, 1785, from England Into France
London, J. Robson, 1786. First edition. Cloth. An important work, somewhat compromised but with interesting provenance. John Jefferies' work recounts his experiences on two hot air balloon journeys the author took with the influential Jean-Pierre Blanchard. Previously owned by the French aeronaut Char This work is a quarto, with the signatures running as C-N2, O1. ESTC citation number T10668. The first flight took off from Mayfair, London, and landed in Ingress in Kent. The second flight was monumental for being the first flight over the English Channel. The journey took two and half hours, and flew from Dover Castle to Guines. John Jeffries was an American scientist and military surgeon during the American Revolution. He is best known for his work with Blanchard. He is also credited with being one of the first weather observers in America, taking daily weather measurements in 1774, and taking weather measurements whilst in the hot air balloon over London. Bookplate to the front pastedown, 'Charles Dollfus&apos. Dolfus was a French aeronaut, who dedicated his whole life to aeronautics, making his first balloon flight in 1911 at the age of eighteen.
