Publisher's cloth, blindstamped and with gilt vignette on upper cover, spine faded with lettering in gilt. Provenance: Colonel Sir John Conway Lloyd (1878-1954) of Dinas, a political reformer and antiquary.First edition. Williams was an assistant surgeon in the 68th Light Infantry and the first British political agent at Mandalay. He was determined to find a practical overland trade-route between Burma and Western China. The first chapter deals with trade and telegraph routes to Western China from Burma. The second chapter contains his diary of the journey up the Irrawaddy from Mandalay to Bhamo, and the return. He describes people and life at Bhamo, particularly of the Chinese, Shans and Kachins and Burmese officials. The illustrations are made after the author's own drawings and photographs. First edition, limited to 500 copies, of which this is no.116.A beautiful presentation of Ganpi handmade paper, a traditional high quality Japanese paper made from the fibre of the plant species Diplomorpha sikokiana. It has a smooth, shiny surface which is resistant to insects and ageing, used for artworks and official documents. This set includes four papers handmade by Abe Eishiro (1902-84), the first Japanese paper-maker to be designated as a National Living Treasure (1968) and an early follower of Yanagi Muneyoshi's Japanese Arts & Crafts Movement. Scarce (No copies in OCLC).

Contains 125 woodblock illustrations (12 x 29.5 cm), opposite pages with fine outline illustrations and Japanese captions. Accordion folded. Original silk decorated boards, in different colours, with printed title label, some minor stain (more to the second volume). Housed in the original paper folders with title labels, publisher's stamps and labels, cotton ties, worn.An impressive work with colourful designs depicting flowers, plants, artefacts, birds, butterflies, etc. Protected by tissue guards (a few missing). Some browning to the paper, mainly offsetting from the guards, gold and silver sprinkles have oxidised. Seems rare, no complete copies at OCLC. Yamamoto Sekkei, renowned artist in Kyoto who practised the traditional art dyeing technique Yûzen and taught Kawarazaki Kodo and others. Yûzen, which originated in the 17th century, is a process using stencils to transfer a design on to fabric, colours added layer by layer inside outlines.

. Tall 8vo. Size: 33 x 20,5 cm. Lvs (21) including two blanks, title page, 32 pages of text and 6 woodcut illustrations printed in red colour. Stiched, with leaves folded in the oriental manner. Original blue wrappers, title label on front cover. Housed in a special made cloth folder. First edition, published in a traditional Chinese wood-block printed edition, limited to 274 copies. It is an autobiographical short story by Mo Yan, the celebrated Chinese author who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature 2012. The Chinese characters are cut in an unique font used in the work "Caochuang Yunyu" dating from the Southern Song period (1127-79), of which there is only one known example. The font is well proportional, done in an elegant calligraphic style and easy to read. The lovely illustrations are from paper cuts done by the famous paper cutter Deng Hui, and have been transferred to woodblocks by the painter Cui Dezheng.

Yokoo Tadanori is one of Japan's most internationally recognised graphic designers and artists. He was born in 1936 in Hy›go prefecture and began his career as a stage designer for an avant-garde theatre in Tokyo. In the 1960s he travelled to India and became interested in mysticism and psychedelia, and he created a unique and entirely original art style. This collection which was exhibited throughout Japan at this time comprises various graphic works, paintings, advertisements, photographs etc. An American edition was published in 1977.

Mipam is a love story taken from old Tibetan folktales with valuable information about Tibetan culture and spiritualism. Very rare.Aphur Yongden (1899-1955), also known as Arthur Alfred Longden, was a Tibetan lama and spiritual teacher. He first met the famous explorer and writer Alexandra David-Néel in a monastery in Sikkim in 1914 and they became travelling companions. Together they reached Lhasa in 1924, and David-Néel became the first Western woman to visit the holy city. She adopted Yongden as her son in 1929. Howgego IV D7.
